A collection of correspondence, typescripts, proofsheets, pamphlets, periodicals, and memorabilia by or relating to Sir Winston Churchill. Included are files of Daniel Longwell, editor of LIFE from 1946 to 1954, dealing with the serialization of A HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH SPEAKING PEOPLES and TRIUMPH AND TRAGEDY in LIFE. Accompanying the collection is a group of approximately 350 books by or about Churchill. Many are first editions or inscribed copies.

The collection is divided into two categories: her cartoons, and her children's books. The cartoon collection contains original art, process sketches, sketchbooks, etc. The children's book collection contains her manuscripts, sketches, production materials, and more. The collection also includes her portfolio from Jerusalem's Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, ca. 1970s.

Professional and personal correspondence, manuscripts and notes for his many publications in the social sciences and Renaissance studies, drafts and notes for his THE IDEA OF USURY and writings about Max Weber, other papers collected during his teaching career, and materials for the many professional conferences which he attended and for the academic associations and societies in which he was active.

A collection of letters and memorabilia of John William Burgess, his wife, Ruth Payne Jewett Burgess, his son Elisha Payne Jewett Burgess, his daughter-in-law, Annette Curnen Burgess, his grand-daughter, Ruth Payne Jewett Burgess, and the Burgess, Jewett, Payne, and Curnen families. The personal correspondence numbering 17 items, covers the period 1908 to 1927 mainly between John and Elisha Burgess. There are two letters of a social nature from Eleanor Roosevelt and Nicholas Murray Butler and one lengthy post card from George Bernard Shaw to Annette Curnen Burgess. Also, memorabilia including portraits, photographs, books, diplomas, and medals.

These files have been compiled by the Rare Book and Manuscript Library from its origin in 1930 through the present day. The material derives largely from gifts, and the occasional purchase; much of the subject file in particular is made of ephemera included in the American Type Founders, Co. Library, purchased in 1942. Prospectuses and information sent by fine presses and book artists are added to the relevant files in an ongoing fashion. The files cover subjects from the beginning of printing to the current day.

Records of the North American Committee to Aid Spanish Democracy and Medical Bureau to Aid Spanish Democracy, two New York City-based American organizations working to raise funds and provide medical and humanitarian aid for the Republican cause in the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), and to refugees who fled Spain after the defeat of the Republican forces in April 1939. The organizations formally merged in January 1938 and became known as the Spanish Refugee Relief Campaign. These files include the organization's official reports, correspondence, pamphlets, broadsides, photographs, and publicity material, as well as several scrapbooks of news clippings.

Personal correspondence, speeches, subject files, photographs, and printed and miscellaneous material of Hogan. The correspondence, speeches, and other material relate primarily to his activities as District Attorney, and to his unsuccessful campaign for the U.S. Senate, 1958. The papers also reflect Hogan's deep concern for Columbia University, as a Trustee and a member of numerous alumni committees. Among the major correspondents are Harry J. Carman, Dwight David Eisenhower, Robert F. Kennedy, Arthur Hays Sulzburger, and Herbert Bayard Swope.

Correspondence, manuscripts, documents, photographs, subject files and printed materials of Simon Lissim. Among the correspondents are Aleksandr Benois, Mikhail Larionov, Georgiĭ Lukomskiĭ and Saveliĭ Sorin. There are many manuscripts by Lissim himself including the tests for a number of lectures and speeches, sections of his memoirs and essays on aesthectics. The documents include passports documenting his emigration from Russia to France and the United States, and several awards and certificates. There are many photographs of Lissim as well as dozens of photographic reproductions of his work, uncluding Lenox and Sèvres porcelain, textile designs, silver work and graphic arts. There are subjecxt files relating to two books for which he did the illustrations, and there are many folders of clippings documenting his career.

Papers of the American Bureau for Medical Aid to China consist of correspondence, memoranda, reports, minutes, committee files, membership records, financial records, fund raising records, motion pictures, audio tapes, phonograph records, photographs, posters, publications of ABMAC and other printed materials. Also included are the files of related Chinese relief organizations: Aid Refugee Chinese Intellectuals, 1954-1969; American Emergency Relief, 1941-1946; United Services to China, 1941-1977. Of particular interest are approximately 6,000 photographs of Chinese medical colleges, hospitals, laboratories and personnel and 45 phonograph records including speeches by such ABMAC supporters as Mme. Chiang Kai-Shek, Pearl S. Buck, Wendell Willkie, Fiorello LaGuardia and a number of movie stars

Correspondence, manuscripts, notes, drafts of speeches, appointment books, subject files, documents, photographs, memorabilia and printed materials. There are notes from her lectures on Sociology at Adelphi College in 1911-1912; papers from 1912-1932, when Perkins served on the Commission for Safety and on the Industrial Commission of New York State; the main body of the material is from the period of her cabinet office, 1933-1945; and some items from her days on the Civil Service Commission, 1946-1953. Also included are personal and family papers.

Correspondence, family and business papers of Ernest Jones, 1819-1869, English militant socialist and leader of the Chartist movement, and publisher of two newspapers propagating Marxist doctrines. Collection consists of ca.1,708 items, and some family correspondence and mementoes. The most valuable part appears to be his notes refuting various libel charges brought against him. The Tharchin Collection consists primarily of correspondence, publications and drafts, photographs, daybooks and financial accounts, and autobiographical materials. The geographic coverage of the collection spans both sides of the Himalayas, in particular, the activities of intellectuals, officials, missionaries, and other historical figures in India, Sikkim, and Tibet.

Correspondence, manuscripts, documents, photographs, notes, inteviews, articles, newspapers, clippings, and press releases of Harrison Evans Salisbury, a prominent journalist and editor.

Correspondence, manuscripts, drafts, notes, documents, drawings, photographs, audio tapes, clippings, and other printed materials covering every aspect of Helen Worden Erskine Cranmer's life and career. There are extensive biographical files on: Jenny S. Bradley, Prince Charles of England, Joseph Dixon, Dwight and Mamie Doud Eisenhower, Rosina Lhévinne, Paul Niehans, the Morgan twins (Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt and Thelma Morgan Converse Furness), Jovanka Tito, Harry and Bess Truman, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor; and large files on crime, recluses, New York City history, and travel. There are extensive drafts and source materials for her unpublished autobiography. There are pencil sketches, pen-and-ink drawings, watercolors, charcoal sketches, photographs, and printed copies by Helen Worden Erskine Cranmer and by others.

Letters, diaries, albums, photographs, and printed material.

Robert M. Morgenthau (1919-2019) served as the District Attorney for New York County (the borough of Manhattan) for 35 years (1974-2009) and made a reputation for prosecuting white-collar crime. In this regard, the Papers hold many research files covering such aspects of white-collar crime as money laundering, offshore banking and tax havens. Morgenthau rarely handled a case himself. He delegated prosecutions to key aides in his office of 500 lawyers. Although not comprehensive, the Papers do contain a few files of assignment sheets covering the period (1938-2008). These sheets indicate which bureau each Assistant District Attorney was assigned to each month. The Papers, in turn, do not have any employment information about individual lawyers or the specific cases they worked on while employed in the Manhattan District Attorney's Office under Morgenthau. However, researchers should review "Series VI: Press Releases" and "Series VIII: Statements and Testimonies before Local, State and National Governmental Bodies," in order to gain an understanding of the issues handled by the Manhattan DA office during Robert Morgenthau's tenure.

These papers relate to her governmental activities and provide an important documentary record of her career to 1950. Included are mimeographed and typed copies of minutes of the various committees upon which she served, city bills and other municipal legislation, correspondence, memoranda, notes, etc. Earle family papers have been added. There is also a microfilm copy of Asher William Schwartz's A STUDY OF THE NEW YORK CITY COUNCIL

The collection consists of 2,924 photographs and 1,327 drawing reproductions of architectural projects by the firm of John Russell Pope, and later Eggers & Higgins.

This collection primarily contains materials related to Percy and Harold Uris and their real estate businesses. Correspondence, financial records, and estate papers document the professional and personal lives of the brothers and their wives. The bulk of the business records are from their properties at 380 Madison Avenue and 300 Park Avenue. There is limited information about the other Uris properties and Uris Building Corporation. Finally, the collection contains records from the Uris Brothers Foundation, Inc about the family's philanthropic endeavors.

Mike Friedrich began his comics career as a fanzine contributor before, beginning at age 18, writing comics stories for both DC Comics and Marvel Comics. In the second half of the 1970s, he published Star*Reach, an independent comics anthology that included both mainstream and alternative artists. In the early 1980s, Friedrich used the same name for his comics creators agency. He was also co-founder of WonderCon, which Comic-Con International purchased in 2001. The collection includes client directories, income journals, client surveys, contracts, Star*Reach promotional swag, and more. Friedrich has received the Bill Finger Award for Excellence in Comic-Book Writing, which recognizes underappreciated comics writers.

Collection includes the portrait of Lawrence that the actress used on her own notecards, artwork, letters, programs, clippings, and a photograph.

Correspondence, manuscripts, contracts, memos., and photographs. The correspondence pertains to the publications of numerous important fiction and non-fiction authors. The files are particularly strong for authors included in two important historical series"The New American Nation" Richard B. Morris and Henry S. Commager, editors; and "The Rise of Modern Europe" William L. Langer, editor. The files of Cass Canfield Sr. contain substantial material on Planned Parenthood and International Planned Parenthood.

The collection documents the scholarship and writing of John Eugene Unterecker, a poet, biographer of the poet Hart Crane, and professor of English. The majority of the collection is composed of correspondence and manuscripts. Materials date from 1961 to 1987.

Papers of Thorndike, consisting of correspondence, mansucripts, diaries, notes, photocopies of medieval scientific manuscripts, glass slides, books, pamphlets, and reprints. The correspondence relates to his scholarly research and publication in the field of the history of medieval science. Also, some family and personal correspondence. One half of the collection consists of photostatic copies of manuscripts Thorndike indexed in his major work, A CATALOGUE OF INCIPITS OF MEDIAEVAL SCIENTIFIC WRITINGS IN LATIN (1963), the first draft, final copy, galley proofs, related correspondence, and extensive card files of notes used in compiling the work. There is also a typescript of the 1937 edition. Thorndike's 76 volumes of personal diaries, 1902-1963, detail his daily activities, appointments, trips abroad, and lists of reading. In addition there are his other manuscripts for journal articles and book reviews.

Material related to Drager and his work as a creative arts agent. Records include address books, business records, correspondence, photographs, negatives, and publicity records.

Manuscripts of Sokolsky, including notes and typescripts for his newspaper columns, magazine articles, radio broadcasts, and for several of his books, including Outlines of Universal History, Tinder Box of Asia, and We Jews. Also, scrapbooks and envelopes of clippings of his newspaper columns and articles; and approximately 1,800 transcriptions of Sokolsky's radio broadcasts.

Correspondence, manuscripts, typescripts, research files, documents, printed materials, photographs, and memorabilia of Mr and Mrs Hough. Correspondence includes both personal and business letters, dealing with wildlife conservation, civic interests, and birding. There is some correspondence of George A. Hough, Sr., father of H.B. Hough, who was editor of the New Bedford MA Standard. Most of the correspondence is arranged alphabetically, by personal name or subject, out-going and in-coming filed together. Henry and Elizabeth Hough's correspondence, for which there are no in-coming or related letters, are filed chronologically. Cataloged correspondents include Calvin Coolidge, Max Eastman, Helen Keller, John F. Kennedy, Emily Post, and James Reston.

Correspondence, speeches, reports, testimony, press releases, and articles of Young. The files document Young's leadership in many social welfare and civil rights organizations, as well as his activities as a columnist and speaker. Cataloged correspondents include Robert F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Hubert H. Humphrey, Martin Luther King, Jr., Coretta Scott King, Roy Wilkins, and John W. Gardner.

A collection concerned with the various phases of black life in America, containing clippings, pamphlets, photographs, pictures, extracts from periodicals, and a representative group of approximately 350 letters, signatures, manuscripts, and documents. Among the letters are several each from Countee Cullen, Frederick Douglass, Alexander Dumas, fils, William Lloyd Garrison, Claude McKay, Abraham Lincoln, Henry Mencken, William Pickens, Albert A. Smith, and Booker T. Washington. Also, eighteen slavery documents.

Correspondence, memoranda, and legal and financial documents of Keppel. The files deal largely with Keppel's personal and professional life during his tenure as President of the Carnegie Corporation, and also include some files from his years as Newton D. Baker's Third Assistant Secretary of War, and as Dean of Columbia College. There are extensive files of correspondence from and to Keppel's parents and children, as well as files concerning his activities in organizations such as the Century and Columbia University Clubs. The letters from friends and business associates concern American education, politics, business, and cultural life, particularly in the New York metropolitan area, from 1900 to 1943.

The most substantial part of the collection is the extensive correspondence between Nien Cheng and June Rose Garrott (originals have been scanned onto discs). There are letters; WWW print-outs; email print-outs; artwork; audio cassettes; VHS tapes; DVDs; CDs; photographs; a scroll; a fan; printed ephemera; books; and a bust of Lao She.

The General Manuscript Collection is an artificial collection of correspondence, diaries, lecture notes, class work, essays, administrative documents, minutes, and other documents collected by the Rare Book & Manuscript Library. Single items or very small collections are generally classified as part of the general manuscript collection rather than assigned an individual manuscript number. Additionally, small additions to existing RBML manuscript collections may be classified as part of the General Manuscript Collection.

The career, philanthropic, political, and personal aspects of Charles Richard Crane's life were closely intertwined. Among the correspondence of significance in the papers are letters to and from James Francis Abbott, Kathryn Newell Adams, Jane Addams, Edmund Henry Hynman Allenby, Edvard Benes, Boris III, King of Bulgaria, Louis Dembitz Brandeis, Nicholas Murray Butler, Frances F. In addition to personal correspondence and documents, there are files of Amnesty International, the human rights organization of which Morris was American Section chairman. Also included are notes and manuscripts of Morris' studies in Japanese literature and culture, particularly relating to his many books and translations. His interest in puzzles, and compilations of several volumes of them, are reflected in notes and correspondence. This collection documents the life and career of Edgar Allen Tafel: New York architect, Frank Lloyd Wright historian, and one of the original apprentices of the Taliesin Fellowship from 1932. The collection primarily documents Tafel's professional activities and his later independent architectural career which was most prominent from 1965-1985. The collection is made up of nine series: Personal Papers, Correspondence, Writings, Professional Papers, Office Records, Project Records, Photographs and Slides, Audio-Visual Material, and Printed Material.

The Institute of Current World Affairs records document the history of the ICWA, its sister organization, the American Universities Field Staff, and its founders, Charles and John Crane. Documents include first-hand reports authored by Fellows and field staff, correspondence, minutes, planning documents, subject files, financial records, publications, and photographs.

Correspondence relating to Erskine's various educational, musical and literary interests; manuscripts of his writings; lecture notes for college courses; souvenirs of his army service in World War I and his Columbia University professorship, and student papers from his own school and college days. Collection contains both personal and professional papers of Joseph McCrindle. The professional papers are centered around the records of his literary agency, while the personal papers include photographs, correspondence, and ephemera related to McCrindle and his family, particularly his maternal grandmother Edith Feder.

Grauer's voluminous professional, personal, and family correspondence reflect his many and varied interests in radio, television, motion pictures, sound recordings, journalism, book collecting, printing, the graphic arts, and travel. Among the significant correspondents there are 43 letters from Henry Miller, 26 letters from Eric Partridge, and ten letters from Bruce Rogers. There are numerous single letters from public figures and celebrities, many written to the author, Quentin Reynolds, who organized Grauer's 25th Anniversary in Broadcasting in 1950. Among these are George Abbott, Agnes de Mille, Samuel Goldwyn, John Hersey, Bob Hope, Lauritz Melchior, Edward R. Murrow, Anaïs Nin, David Sarnoff, and Thornton Wilder. There are thousands of letters from fans, friends, and family, including Grauer's wife Melanie Kahane, the interior decorator. b The manuscripts consist of early writings; radio, television, film, and sound recording scripts with related notes and correspondence; speeches; periodical articles; and several book manuscripts. The majority of the Scripts File are for NBC productions, but also included are scripts for the Voice of America, commercials, films, and records. Among Grauer's many "firsts" in broadcasting are the first live report of Count Folke Bernadotte's assasination, the first radio show to present cash prizes ("Pot 'o Gold"), and NBC television's first live news event, the opening of the 1939 New York World's Fair. The Activities File documents Grauer's presence in broadcasting, book collecting, printing and the graphic arts, travel, including the promotion of the Pan American Highway, and his membership in countless organizations. There are more than 3,000 photographs documenting his career from his years as a child actor through the more than 40 years he was associated with NBC. He was photographed with the famous men and women of his generation whose activities he covered on the air. The Publicity File contains newspaper and periodical clippings on his career. Also included is one audio tape recording of "Salute to Ben Grauer" Nov. 15, 1950, an off the air recording

Correspondence, manuscripts, articles, documents, photographs, posters, clippings relating to the professional career of Phoebe Jacobs and notable jazz musicians, especially Louis Armstrong.

This collection is photograph archive of the works of architectural photographer George Cserna. Images include interior and exterior shots of prominent New York buildings primarily during the 1960s. The collection has been arranged alphabetically by the client or architect of the building. Some of George Cserna's most notable work in this collection includes photographs of Ulrich Franzen's Agronomy Building, Emerson Hall, and Goddard Library at Cornell University; Haines, Lundberg, and Waehler's U.S. Trust Building and Schering-Plough Headquarters; Victor Lundy's I. Miller Store and IBM Headquarters; and I. M. Pei's John Hancock Tower, Mount Royal Bank and Ville Marie Complex, and MIT Chemistry Building. The collection also contains photographs of exhibitions and openings at the Museum of Modern Art in the 1960s and 1970s, such as The Responsive Eye and Toward a Rational Automobile. Finally, the collection has photographic portraits of notable persons including John dos Passos, W.H. Auden, and William Faulkner.

The papers contain 273 drafts, manuscripts, and typescripts representing every genre in which Ms. Sophie Kerr worked along with correspondence, book artwork, and photographs. In addition, it includes 12 book-length manuscripts, the earliest being Love at Large, a novel published in 1916. The collection also holds books written by Sophie Kerr and volumes inscribed to her from her personal library.

Professional and personal files including Armstrong's correspondence with professional associations, other engineers, and friends, his research notes, circuit diagrams, lectures, articles, legal papers, and other related materials. Of his many inventions and developments, the most important are: 1) the regenerative or feedback circuit, 1912, the first amplified radio reception, 2) the superheterodyne circuit, 1918, the basis of modern radio and radar, 3) superregeneration, 1922, a very simple, high-power receiver now used in emergency mobile service, and 4) frequency modulation - FM, 1933, static-free radio reception of high fidelity. More than half the files concern his many lawsuits, primarily with Radio Corporation of America, over infringement of the Armstrong patents. Litigation continued until 1967. Other files deal with his work in the Marcellus Hartley Research Laboratory at Columbia University, 1913-1935, and with the American Expeditionary Forces in France during World War I, his Air Force contracts for communications development, Army research during World War II, the Radio Club of America, the Institute of Radio Engineers, FM development at his radio station at Alpine, N.J., the use of FM in television, his involvement in Federal Communications Commission hearings and legislation, and his work with the Zenith Radio Corporation. This small collection includes four of Stanley's hard-to-find thumbnail scripts as well as the original Tripp art for a dozen Little Lulu stories. Tracings reveal sketches for covers as well as Disney characters. There is also a small amount of correspondence, a photograph of a very young Tripp at his drawing table, sketches of Hanna-Barbera and Terrytoons characters, and much more, all of which reveal the range of Tripp's career.

Correspondence including twenty letters from Helen Keller and her companion Polly Thomson, letters from Pauline Hemingway and her son Patrick M. Hemingway, from Patricia Nixon, Nancy Reagan, and from Harry Emerson Fosdick. These are all of a personal nature. There are also several books by and about Helen Keller and by Ernest Hemingway, some of which are first editions and some inscribed by the author.

E.M. Forster's Christmas cards to Melville Henry Crane, n.d., and his letters to Walter D'Arcy Cresswell, 1936, and Duncan Grant, 1968. Also, a manuscript of Forster's review of G.M. Trevelyan's A LAYMAN'S LOVE, 1954; a mimeographed typescript of Robert Pocock's radio script"E.M. Forster : A Profile" 1965, and photographs of Forster.

Correspondence and works of Andre Racz, including one letter from Gabriela Mistral, 1952, a portrait of her (etching-aquatint), Ricz's etching (metal plate) for Mistral's POEMAS DE LAS MADRES (Santiago, Chile, 1950), a Christmas card, 1970, illustrated and signed by Racz, and a holograph of Thomas Merton's poem AUBADE--HARLEM, Racz's facsimile of this poem etched on a zinc plate, and his artist's proof pulled from the plate. Also, signature practice page for scroll presented to President Sovern by the Executive Committee of the Faculty in appreciation of his work as chairman, 1968.

The collection contains 26 letters by Rackham and nine Christmas cards either specially designed by him or incorporating designs made for his books. Letters to Rackham's biographer, Derek Hudson, from Winifred Wheeler, daughter of Walter Freeman, a friend who started Rackham on his commercial career. The manuscript notebooks, galley proofs, and a printed copy of Hudson's ARTHUR RACKHAM: HIS LIFE AND WORK are included. Also, notes, drafts, and miscellaneous material relating to the Arthur Rackham catalog published by the Friends of Columbia University Libraries in 1967. In addition, the library has a collection of 413 Rackham drawings, watercolors, and oil paintings, 30 sketch books, and about 400 printed books and ephemera.

Correspondence and production files of The Goliard Press, relating to the publication of contemporary English and American poetry. Most of the letters are addressed to Barry Hall or Tom Raworth. Among the poets represented are Basil Bunting, Robert Creeley, Allen Ginsberg, Anselm Hollo, Ted Hughes, Christopher Logue, Michael McClure, Charles Olson, and Louis Zukofsky.

This scrapbook includes correspondence, typescripts, printed materials, black and white photographs, postcards, and other ephemera relating to the life, work, and personal interests of William Adams Delano and his architectural partnership with Chester H. Aldrich.

Papers and memorabilia of Lou Little, including fifteen letters and copies of letters from Dwight D. Eisenhower, awards and certificates presented to Lou Little, and numerous photographs relating to the Columbia football teams, other athletic associations, charities, and other interests of Lou Little. Collection of visiting cards of musical artists (composers, vocalists, conductors, etc.) and authors, presidents, and other celebrities of the 19th and 20th centuries, most bearing handwritten messages. There are also photographs and other memorabilia.
