Summary Information

Abstract

The collection includes the project files and architectural drawings of the Taliesin Associated Architects, the firm that was established after the death of Frank Lloyd Wright in 1959. Projects include commissions that were left on Wright's desk at the time of his death as well as independent commissions and renovation work. Over 1,000 architectural projects are represented either in the paper records, the architectural drawings, or both.

Summary

The collection consists of the project and administrative records of the Taliesin Associated Architects, the architecture firm established after the death of American architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1959. Over 1,000 architectural projects are represented in the collection, ranging from residential commissions to larger civic and urban planning projects.

  • Series I: Architectural Drawings

    This is the largest series in the collection. Given its large extent and the hundreds of projects represented, the series has been divided into subseries based on project type (residential, religious, office, retail, etc.) Within each subseries, the projects are arranged in alphabetical order by first letter in the project title. The largest subseries is Subseries 1: Residential. When the information was available, the project number and the lead designer are included in the description of the project.

    Architectural drawings for the following projects were given their own series (listed below) due to the large extent of drawings for each project: Arizona Biltmore, Arizona State University, Marin County, and Monona Basin.

  • Series II: Project Photographs

    Projects are arranged in project number order (rough chronological order).

  • Series III: Project Records

    This is the second largest series in the collection. The files were referred to as "Dead Files" at Taliesin West. The project records typically include correspondence, contracts, reports, contractor paperwork and publicity material. The series is arranged by project in alphabetical order by the first letter of the project title. When the information was available, the project number is included in the project title. The file description in this finding aid were maintained from a legacy database acquired by the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. Files have not been verified by staff at Avery Library.

    Project records for the following projects were given their own series (listed below) due to the large extent of records for each project: Arizona Biltmore, Arizona State University, Marin County, and Monona Basin.

  • Series IV: Administrative and Miscellaneous Records

    The files in this series formed what was were referred to as "Dead Files" at Taliesin West. The "Dead Files" have been separated in this collection into two series" Project Records and Administrative and Miscellaneous Records. Files in this series were not explicitly related to a project and therefore separated out of the Project Record series. The file description in this finding aid were converted from a legacy database acquired by the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. Files have not been verified by staff at Avery Library.

  • Series V: Arizona Biltmore

    This series includes project records and architectural drawings for the Arizona Biltmore, including various additions and alternations.

  • Series VI: Arizona State University

    This series includes project records and architectural drawings for the Grady Gammage Memorial Auditorium at Arizona State University. The series also includes architectural drawings for other projects on the campus of Arizona State University including an art building, music building, and Natural History museum.

  • Series VII: Marin County

    This series includes project records and architectural drawings for various projects in Marin County, California.

  • Series VIII: Monona Basin

    This series includes project records and architectural drawings for the Monona Basin Project in Madison, Wisconisn; also referred to as the Monona Terrace Civic Center.

Processing Information

The collection was originally catalogued and organized by Elizabeth Dawsari at the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. The collection was re-inventoried and rehoused by Paul Guidos (Student Assistant) in various stages between the years 2016 and 2021. Shelley Hayreh (Archivist & Collection Manager) converted the various inventories into this finding aid in 2021.
