Series III: Council Activities

(Box III contains materials related to activities in which the Council was involved, outside the organization. It contains material dealing with the ALA, Public Relations Courses, Workshops, and Publicity Programs. Under the new arrangement there are a total of 53 folders. Box 3 ALA Joint Committee on Careers:


Box 3 Folder 1 Correspondence concerning the joint sponsorship by ALA And LPRC of a raeating and dinnar on the subject of promoting Librarianship as a career., 1967-1968, 14 items


Box 3 ALA Joint Committee on Recruitment 1948:


Box 3 Folder 2 The file includes correspondence about a joint project, the division of authority and responsibility, and correspondence about a possible article about Carl Milam to be written by the LPRC., January through July of 1948, 22 items

Box 3 Folder 3 This folder includes correspondence and information about the project. A letter and article from Ralph Shaw, and a program for the ALA program is also included., August through November of 1948, 22 items


Box 3 ALA Joint Committee on Recruitment 1949-1950:


Box 3 Folder 4 Includes many items of correspondence, copies of the Committee Meeting minutes, and letters to ALA. The members of the Public Relations Gouncil dedided they could not undertake a project on the scope planned by ALA., 36 items

Box 3 Folder 5 Six letters in alphabetical arrangement concerning approval of a guest speaker, Paul Smith. Also includes a money authorization, and a telegram., c.1955, 10 items


Box 3 Folder 6 This folder contains correspondence between Alice Norton and Dorothy Perillo concerning the submission of an article for publication about the LPRC Clinic on the subject of writing annual reports. The folder also contains a copy of the article., 1960, 5 items

Box 3 Folder 7 The material in this folder contains materials about the conference held July 20-23, 1958. Includes plans for the conference and topics discussed., c.1958, 2 items


Box 3 Library Communications Workshop:


Box 3 Folder 8 Material in this folder concerns a Public Relations workshop held in Florida, including a summery of the meeting., 1958, 3 items


Box 3 Columbia University Public Relations Course:


Box 3 Folder 9 Material in this folder concerns the course offered at Columbia to replace the NYU Course. Extensive correspondence with Dean Walton concerning the nature of the course, the cost, and similar subjects., 1960-1963, 26 items


Box 3 Drexel Public Relations Course:


Box 3 Folder 10 Undated, The only item in the collection is a prospectus concerning the five day workshop offered at Drexel about Public Relations., 1 items


Box 3 NYU Public Relations Course:


Box 3 Folder 11 This material concerns a series of 10 proposed lectures to be given at NYU. It includes a slit of schools reporting Public Relations Programs, or Courses. The program was cancelled because of dissatisfaction with the instructor., 1958-1959, 12 items


Box 3 Council on National Library Associations:


Box 3 Folder 12 This folder contains correspondence, meeting agendas, and meeting reports. Extends invitation to the LPRC to join the Council of National Library Associations., 1955-1956, 11 items


Box 3 National Publicity Council:


Box 3 Folder 13 Largely correspondence, between Marie Loiseaux;(LPRC) and Catherine Emig (NPC), concerning membership. Includes some pamphlets about the activities of the National Publicity Council. No conclusion is indicated., 1947, 6 items


Box 3 National Library Week - Book Fair:


Box 3 Folder 14 Material concerns plans for a book exhibit at Rockerfeller Center consisting of out-door stalls to help publicize National Library Week. The idea was suggested to the Council by ALA. The file includes letters to large associations in the area requesting their ideas and assistance. The project was aba ndoned due to the adverse comments received., 1959-1960, 17 items


Box 3 New Books Previews:


Box 3 Folder 15 This folder includes an evaluation of the Few Books Previews project, a list of the librarians attending, seating charts, letters of invitation to serve on the executive board, and the responses., 1964-1965, 34 items


Box 3 New Books Previews Criticism:


Box 3 Folder 16 This folder consists of letters of complaint from participants, and from LPRC members questioning the wisdom of continuing the program. It was decided to survey the membership for a consensus of opinion., 23 items

Box 3 Folder 17 This folder contains the questionaires and correspondence relating to the New Books Previews, and tentative plans for the 1964 program., 26 items


Box 3 Samstag "Survey":


Box 3 Folder 18 Mr. Samstag of Time was asked to address the council. In preparation for his speech he took a survey of Time Inc. employees to determine their use of the library, and included his results in his speech. The survey results produced much discussion and criticism within the Council Membership. This folder includes the original invitation to Mr. Samstag to speak, correspondence relating to the speech, and to the controversy it provoked, and a copy of an article written for publication refuting the results of the "survey"., c.1958, 14 items

Box 3 Folder 19 This folder contains a variety of materials that do not seem to fit in any other group. It includes letters, announcements, lists, pledge requests, correspondence about dues, and programs., 1947-1971, 37 items
