Files of the Council, including four letters from Christopher Morley to the council. The files are incomplete.

  • Series I: Organization of the Council

    (Box I contains materials relating to the organization of the Council, including Constitutions, Lists of Officers, Financial reports, and Meeting Minutes.)

  • Series II: Anniversaries, Chapter Meetings, AV, etc.

    (Box II contains materials relating to the activities of the Public Relations Council, such as Chapter Files, Anniversary Celebrations, Awards, and a file of photographs. Please note that there are large gaps in the collection)

  • Series III: Council Activities

    (Box III contains materials related to activities in which the Council was involved, outside the organization. It contains material dealing with the ALA, Public Relations Courses, Workshops, and Publicity Programs. Under the new arrangement there are a total of 53 folders. Each item is labeled on the back bottom right hand corner with folder number and item number)

Biographical / Historical

The Library Public Relations Council was founded in 1939. Its purpose is to investigate, discuss, and promote every phase of public relations of all types of libraries.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, only CU affiliates may view materials on-site. YOU MUST REQUEST AN APPOINTMENT BEFORE PLACING REQUESTS. Email rbml@library.columbia.edu to request an appointment. You may submit a request for materials once your appointment is confirmed. Affiliates will login with their uni and password, and need to register the first time they make a request.


Series I: Organization of the Council

(Box I contains materials relating to the organization of the Council, including Constitutions, Lists of Officers, Financial reports, and Meeting Minutes.)


Constitution:


Contains the origionally proposed Constitution and the approximately 5 revised editions. Includes some carbon copies, some correspondance with pencil changes to the constitutions, and copies of ballots sent to the membership about the proposed charges., 27 items



Box 1 Membership Lists:


Box 1 Folder 2 Extremely imcomplete lists of the membership of the library Public delations Council. Nost of the material is for 1968. No material for the 1900s. Some of the lists are origional, some carbon, a few are accompanied by cover letters, 1939-1968, 12 items


Box 1 Officers 1949-1958:


Box 1 Folder 3 A mixture of materials, all related to the election of officers. Includes Publicity Releases listing the new officers, letters concerning the nomination of pro-posed candidates, official ballots, sometimes with final figures added, and official announcements to the membership of the new officers, an accurate list of all the officers may be attained for all years except 1956., 26 items


Box 1 Officers 1959-1971:


Box 1 Folder 4 Same mixture of materials. Totals are frequently included, Lists of Committee Chairperson's are often given, especially for the more recent years., 33 items


Box 1 Honorary Memebrs:


Box 1 Folder 5 Dated 19** During this period anyone who addressed the organization became an honorary member. The folder contains a form letter from President Helen Scherff Taylor inviting 20 individuals to be honorary members. The acceptance letters are arranged alphabetically by author. The folder also includes some additional letters of invitation, and lists of honorary members., 27 items


Box 1 Executive Board 1943-1952:


Box 1 Folder 6 Meeting minutes of the executive board. The board met on an irregular basis hence it is impossible to tell how complete the material is, but there seems to be gaps. The minutes are usually carbon copies, or photocopies., 23 items


Box 1 Executive Board 1953-1961:


Box 1 Folder 7 Material for 1962-1964. is completely non-existant. The materials for the other years contains gaps, and is largely photocopies., 21 items


Box 1 Executive Board 1964-1968:


Box 1 Folder 8 Announcements of board meetings, and copies of the announcements of the meetings of the board., 22 items


Box 1 Executive Board 1969-1972


Box 1 Folder 9 Typed or photocopies of announcements of meetings, and copies of the minutes, 21 items


Box 1 Annual Reports:


Box 1 Folder 10 A miscellaneous collection of materials. Presidential reports, committee reports, annual meeting reports. Many dates are missing. The first item in the folders is a list of the Annual Reports included by year, 1943-1969, 24 items


Box 1 Treasurer' Reports 1944-1961


Box 1 Folder 11 Includes treasurer's annual statements, reports of checking accounts, dispersement of funds, some itemized expense accounts, and a few lists of checks issued. Incomplete records, the eanlier material is extremely detailed. Most of the material is the origional copy., 33 items


Box 1 Treasurer's Reports 1962-1970


Box 1 Folder 12 Treasurer's reports, some final or annual, financial statements ingluding broad accounting for expendatures. Also includes some correspondance about checking accounts., 23 items


Box 1 Announcements 1939-1950


Box 1 Folder 13 Materials sent to members pertaining to meetings, special events, newsletters, notices of board meetings and minutes, and general letters of important events. Also includes some post card notices. Most of the material is copies in the form in which they were sent out, a few carbon copies., 47 items

Box 1 Folder 14 Same kind of material as above., 37 items


Box 1 Minutes 1939-1949


Box 1 Folder 15 Meeting and activity minutes, including information about and reports of field trips., 29 items

Box 1 Folder 16 Same kind of material as above, but seems to be complete., 24 items

Box 2 Tenth Anniversary:


Box 2 Folder 1 Deals with the big meeting held to commemorate the founding of the Library Public Relations Council in 1939. The material includes a variety of items, advanced publicity, announcements of the meeting, letters concerning the event, handwritten copies of speeches, and minutes of the meeting., 1949, 14 items


Box 2 Twentieth Anniversary:


Box 2 Folder 2 Similar material to the above. Some publicity and news releases, letters of invitation to all the past presidents to attend, and their answers, arranged in alphabetical order., 1959, 22 items


Box 2 Archives:


Box 2 Folder 3 Largely correspondance. In 1965 Irene Moran was chairman of the archives committee. It was through her efforts that an- attempt was made to assemble any archival collection. She wrote to almost every past officer of the Council asking for any files they might have. Most of the responses were written on the bottom of the original letter., 1965-1968, 19 items


Box 2 Awards 1946-1950:


Box 2 Folder 4 The Public Relations Council awarded prizes to libraries for imaginative publicity campaigns. The material in this folder contains a great deal of correspondance about the Awards project and the various entries in each year's contest. Includes publicity about the event, requests for entries, forms, a few actual examples of entries, and lists of winners., 44 items


Box 2 Awards 1951-1973:


Box 2 Folder 5 Similar to the material described above. Includes publicity announcements, entry forms, correspondence, a judgment criteria form, votes on entries for some years, telegram announcing winners, galley proofs of one entry., 47 items


Box 2 Chapters:


Box 2 6 9 items. Dated c.1953. Includes materials from the Philadelphia, and California Chapters of the Library Public Relations Council. Includes some correspondence, membership forms, a few committee meeting minutes, and miscellaneous announcements., 9 items


Box 2 CHRISTOPHER MORSLY (now cataloged):


Box 2 Folder 7 The folder consists of correspondance to and from Christopher Morely, an American author, about speaking at a Council meeting. The letters are signed by Thomas Brown., 1947-1948, 9 items


Box 2 Cleveland Chapter Correspondence:


Box 2 Folder 8 A large amount of correspondence relating to the establishment of the chapter. A congratulatory telegram celebrating the chapter's first birthday, some meeting announcements, and membership lists., 1946-1952, 28 items


Box 2 Cleveland Chapter Meetings:


Box 2 Folder 9 Includes meeting announcements, election ballots, treasurers reports, membership lists, and membership forms. This material relates mainly to inter chapter events., 1947-1952, 27 items


Box 2 History:


Box 2 Folder 10 Includes letters, press releases, a copy of the Bowker Annual article, and an article by Marie D. Loizeau "Prom Brass Tacks to Brass Stars"., 1946-1966, 9 items


Box 2 Membership Promotion:


Box 2 Folder 11 This folder contains a wide variety of materials for new members. Publicity announcements, membership applications, membership cards, and bills for dues., c.1958, 20 items


Box 2 Recruiting - Dean's Dinner:


Box 2 Folder 20 Correspondence concerning the possibility of the LPRC sponsoring a dinner for the New York Association of Deans to promote interest in librarianship as a career., 1964, 4 items


Box 2 Recruiting - Proposed Guidence Meeting:


Box 2 Folder 21 The material includes letters of invitation to the deans of Simmons College, Columbia University, Drexel Institute, Pratt Institute, Queens College, Rutgers College, and Syracuse University inviting them to help sponsor and pay for a dinner meeting for guidence personel on the subject of librarianship as a career. Most of the responses were negative and the plan was abandoned., 1964-1967, 12 items


Box 2 Folder 22 Packets and Award Brochures, 1966-1967, 21 items


Box 2 Folder 12 "Packets* of good printed publicity are collected each year and sent to members of the organization and participating librarians. This folder includes letters, publicity statements, forms, announcements, solicitations for material and some promotional material., 1959-1973, 17 items


Box 2 Philadelphia Chapter:


Box 2 Folder 13 Materials deal with the chapter in Philadelphia, most of it is related to one specific meeting. The folder includes letters, telegrams, and meeting publicity., 1955, 10 items


Box 2 Photographs:


Box 2 Folder 14 The pictures are stamped October 19, 1965. Pour black and white eight by ten photos.Three of the photos are of large unidentified groups. The other one is identified on the back in pencil, as Beatrice James, Eric Moon, and Eleanor Vreeland., 4 items


Box 2 Poster:


Box 2 Folder 15 This folder includes three items relating to publicity posters, and several copies of each Doster., c.1963


Box 2 Public Relations Films:


Box 2 Folder 16 This material seems to be intended as a guide to libraries on the production of a film. The file includes correspondence, information, a guide to film making, and a tentative production outline and script., c.1946, 5 items


Box 2 Publications:


Box 2 Folder 17 Undated material. This folder includes materials issued under the copyright of the Library Public Relations Council. It includes two crossword puzzles, two pamphlets, and two copies of a booklet The Use of Television by the Public Library., 6 items


Box 2 Recruitment Project-Organizational:


Box 2 Folder 18 The material deals with the planning and organization of material for a recruitment plan organized under the sponsorship of the LPRC. Correspondence about the exact form the plan was to take, rough drafts of the copy with additions and corrections., February 1963 - December 1963, 29 items


Box 2 Recruitment Project - Correspondence:


Box 2 Folder 19 The final form of the project was a series of advertisemsnts in collage newspapers. Letters to and from the schools selected as "test" cases., 1963-1964, 22 items

Box 3 Folder 1 Correspondence concerning the joint sponsorship by ALA And LPRC of a raeating and dinnar on the subject of promoting Librarianship as a career., 1967-1968, 14 items


Box 3 ALA Joint Committee on Recruitment 1948:


Box 3 Folder 2 The file includes correspondence about a joint project, the division of authority and responsibility, and correspondence about a possible article about Carl Milam to be written by the LPRC., January through July of 1948, 22 items


Box 3 ALA Joint Committee on Recruitment 1948:


Box 3 Folder 3 This folder includes correspondence and information about the project. A letter and article from Ralph Shaw, and a program for the ALA program is also included., August through November of 1948, 22 items


Box 3 ALA Joint Committee on Recruitment 1949-1950:


Box 3 Folder 4 Includes many items of correspondence, copies of the Committee Meeting minutes, and letters to ALA. The members of the Public Relations Gouncil dedided they could not undertake a project on the scope planned by ALA., 36 items


Box 3 ALA Public Relations Committee:


Box 3 Folder 5 Six letters in alphabetical arrangement concerning approval of a guest speaker, Paul Smith. Also includes a money authorization, and a telegram., c.1955, 10 items


Box 3 Folder 6 This folder contains correspondence between Alice Norton and Dorothy Perillo concerning the submission of an article for publication about the LPRC Clinic on the subject of writing annual reports. The folder also contains a copy of the article., 1960, 5 items


Box 3 Conference on Library Reporting:


Box 3 Folder 7 The material in this folder contains materials about the conference held July 20-23, 1958. Includes plans for the conference and topics discussed., c.1958, 2 items


Box 3 Library Communications Workshop:


Box 3 Folder 8 Material in this folder concerns a Public Relations workshop held in Florida, including a summery of the meeting., 1958, 3 items


Box 3 Columbia University Public Relations Course:


Box 3 Folder 9 Material in this folder concerns the course offered at Columbia to replace the NYU Course. Extensive correspondence with Dean Walton concerning the nature of the course, the cost, and similar subjects., 1960-1963, 26 items


Box 3 Drexel Public Relations Course:


Box 3 Folder 10 Undated, The only item in the collection is a prospectus concerning the five day workshop offered at Drexel about Public Relations., 1 items


Box 3 NYU Public Relations Course:


Box 3 Folder 11 This material concerns a series of 10 proposed lectures to be given at NYU. It includes a slit of schools reporting Public Relations Programs, or Courses. The program was cancelled because of dissatisfaction with the instructor., 1958-1959, 12 items


Box 3 Council on National Library Associations:


Box 3 Folder 12 This folder contains correspondence, meeting agendas, and meeting reports. Extends invitation to the LPRC to join the Council of National Library Associations., 1955-1956, 11 items


Box 3 National Publicity Council:


Box 3 Folder 13 Largely correspondence, between Marie Loiseaux;(LPRC) and Catherine Emig (NPC), concerning membership. Includes some pamphlets about the activities of the National Publicity Council. No conclusion is indicated., 1947, 6 items


Box 3 National Library Week - Book Fair:


Box 3 Folder 14 Material concerns plans for a book exhibit at Rockerfeller Center consisting of out-door stalls to help publicize National Library Week. The idea was suggested to the Council by ALA. The file includes letters to large associations in the area requesting their ideas and assistance. The project was aba ndoned due to the adverse comments received., 1959-1960, 17 items


Box 3 New Books Previews:


Box 3 Folder 15 This folder includes an evaluation of the Few Books Previews project, a list of the librarians attending, seating charts, letters of invitation to serve on the executive board, and the responses., 1964-1965, 34 items


Box 3 New Books Previews Criticism:


Box 3 Folder 16 This folder consists of letters of complaint from participants, and from LPRC members questioning the wisdom of continuing the program. It was decided to survey the membership for a consensus of opinion., 23 items


Box 3 New Books Previews:


Box 3 Folder 17 This folder contains the questionaires and correspondence relating to the New Books Previews, and tentative plans for the 1964 program., 26 items


Box 3 Samstag "Survey":


Box 3 Folder 18 Mr. Samstag of Time was asked to address the council. In preparation for his speech he took a survey of Time Inc. employees to determine their use of the library, and included his results in his speech. The survey results produced much discussion and criticism within the Council Membership. This folder includes the original invitation to Mr. Samstag to speak, correspondence relating to the speech, and to the controversy it provoked, and a copy of an article written for publication refuting the results of the "survey"., c.1958, 14 items

Box 3 Folder 19 This folder contains a variety of materials that do not seem to fit in any other group. It includes letters, announcements, lists, pledge requests, correspondence about dues, and programs., 1947-1971, 37 items
