102 Linear FeetThis collection of records document the institutional history of the Center for US-China Arts Exchange, established in 1978. Under the directorship of professor and renowned composer Chou Wen-chung, the Center is a not-for-profit organization that connected arts professionals from the US and China through a spectrum of curated programs, conferences, and research trips. Bulk dated between 1977 and 2003, materials in this collection consist of correspondence, reports, photographs, printed materials, as well as audiovisual items. The collection serves as important material evidence that help to tell the recent history of cultural communications among individuals and organizations across the Pacific.

68 linear feetThis collection includes nine letters of Ralph Waldo Emerson as well as letters of Louis Agassiz, Amos Bronson Alcott, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, James Russell Lowell, John Lothrop Motley, Charles Sumner, and John Greenleaf Whittier. In addition, there are two incomplete manuscripts by Emerson and one document from the Liverpool Custom-house signed by Nathaniel Hawthorne as Consul for the United States. The collection also includes the corrected typescript, index, and page and galley proofs for Thomas Franklin Currier, A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES (New York, 1953) which was edited by Professor Tilton. Also, some early correspondence and photographs of the Tilton family and friends. There are letters from the actors Annie Louise Ames, Richard J. Dillon, and Hans L. Meery to Tilton's grandfather, Bernard Paul Verne, as well as photographs, tintypes, and daguerreotypes of the Verne family and friends.

The collection as a whole contains approximately 80,000 items, and focuses on print materials. The materials cover various film events and festivals across multiple genres of films: experimental films, educational films, documentary films, news films, amateur films, and animated films, among many others. The collection contains books, correspondences, handbills, magazines, manuscripts, newspapers, notes, photographs, postcards, posters, scripts/scenarios, slides, glass plate negatives, video cassettes, and other printed materials.

Paul Jarrico papers, 1914-2014
44 linear feetPaul Jarrico (1929-1996) was a Hollywood screenwriter working in the studio system in the 1930s and 1940s. A lifelong communist, he was subpoenaed before the House Committee on Un-American Activities in 1951. His refusal to comply with the Committee's questions saw him lose his job at RKO and placed on the so-called Hollywood "Blacklist." His films were marked by their marriage of art and politics, often commenting on the pressing issues of their time. Notably, his 1954 film Salt of the Earth, a collaboration between blacklisted filmmakers and the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers, was regarded as a subversive critique of mid-century American capitalism.

Professor Chandler taught at Union College before joining the faculty of Columbia University where he taught in the Chemical Department, the College of Physicians and Surgeons, and served as one of the founders and long-time Dean of Columbia University's School of Mines. He was interested in Industrial Chemistry and Public Health, serving on the New York Metropolitan Board of Health for many years and implementing a number of significant public health and public housing reforms.

Felix Augenfeld architectural records and papers, 1910-1972
2 linear feet of papersFelix Augenfeld (1893-1984) was a Viennese architect and designer active in Austria, Czechoslovakia, and Croatia prior to 1938, in London from 1938-1939, and in the United States from 1939 until his death. His work consists primarily of residential projects, including apartments, weekend homes, beach houses, and residences, and includes both architecture and interior design. Like other architect-designers of the time, his work included original furniture and textiles to create a cohesive design experience. Augenfeld's design for Sigmund Freud's desk chair, now at the Freud Museum in London is probably his most well-known work. This collection contains photographs, drawings, blueprints, and sketches of over eighty of Augenfeld's projects with the majority focused on his years in America but with a substantial photograph collection that illustrates his Viennese work. Beyond project records, the collection includes a number of Augenfeld's professional papers that contextualize his work through his research material, portfolios, and scrapbooks, and his personal papers which include his own writings, poetry, correspondence, and photographs of friends and family.
