This series consists of items made primarily out of wood and is divided into 3 sub-series: General, Goodwood Cups, and Plaques.

Box 30 1902 College Class Stick, 1898

Red, white, and blue ribbon. Small segment of wood with metal around end engraved with "1902". Metal around wood engraved: "1902. G. C. Atkins 02C." Letter reads: "Ba[]d from 1902 College Class Stick - Used by proud freshmen only when winning Cane spree etc. from sophs. Presented by Geo. C. Atkins '02C. January 3/41." Letter of donation from Atkins accompanies this item.



Box 95 Coasters, ca. 1990s-2000s

(4) coasters created by Columbia College Today. Images of "C" Rock, Low Library at night, Van Am Memorial in Snow, and Butler Library/Low Plaza at dusk. Images are not the best quality.



Box 17 Yew Tree Segment

Plaque reads: "From one of the old yew trees which grew in the Hosack Botanical Garden from 1806 until removed in 1819 to the site now occupied by the South Court where they survived until 1916."

Box 43 Painted Wooden Box, 1817

Painted with scene identified as Hamilton College along with a signature. In pencil inside of lid: "19 States 1817, E.A. Prentis, Columbia Mines, 1906." Contains a letter from Prentis to Nicholas Murray Butler, 1941, presenting his "Columbiana Collection."



Box 16 Medecine Chest, 1800s

Label reads: "Dr. John Torrey (1796-1873) A traveling medicine chest which belonged to Dr. John Torrey, M.D. 1818, Professor of Chemistry, 1827-1855, Trustee, who died without heirs, whereupon it became the possession of William Torrey Baird, Dr. Torrey's nephew. Presented to Columbia University by Margaret Baird Millar, March 1962."



Box 52 Knife Box, 1700s

Wooden knife box with metal trim and key. Plaque on box: Henry Cruger, Mayor of Bristol and Member of Parliament, 1774-1784, Reign of King George III. "Presented by Edmund A. Prentis, 1960." Henry Cruger was a student at King's College.

Inside of box is lined with newspaper.



Box 65 Printer's Blocks

One box of printer's cuts or stamps to create stationery and other publications. University crown, lions, Alma Mater, Van Am memorial, Engineering hammers, Business School logos, address blocks, etc.



Box 61 Signature Ruler, 1970s

ruler used by Mary Marsh in the Office of the Registrar in the late 1970s to sign diplomas for the President.

Box 29 Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University Picture Cube, 1999

Sub-Series VII.2 Goodwood Cups

The Goodwood Cup became an annual award in 1864. It was presented each year to the most popular member of the Junior class. Fifteen of these cups were awarded before the prize fell prey to the manipulations of fraternity and class politicians. The Cup was given out for the last time in 1878.

Box 70 Memorial Plaque for James Green, 1918

In Memoriam James Green 1899 - 1918. A Student, Athlete and Friend who gave his life on the gridiron for Columbia. Donated by Mr. James Ritchey via Loree True in the Alumni Relations office.



Box 41 DeWitt Clinton Alumni Association plaque, 1940

Plaque with a picture of DeWitt Clinton and Columbia shield, mounted on stand. Inscribed: "DeWitt Clinton Alumni Ass'n plaque award, to honor conspicuous service, 1940, George Macy, '17."


Box 41 Plaque awarded to Frank S. Hogan, 1953
