Series VIII: Lincoln Center

The series is arranged into the following subseries: Meeting Minutes, Project Files, Printed Materials, Early Schemes and Site Plans, Philharmonic Hall, Metropolitan Opera House.

The architectural drawings for Lincoln Center can be found in Series I: Architectural Drawings. Additional photographs and project records can be found in Series II and Series III.


Subseries 1: Meeting Minutes

Lincoln Center meeting minutes are divided into three groupings: Minutes of the Collaborating Architects (1956- 1961), Minutes of the Philharmonic Subcommittee (1960-1962) and Minutes of the Opera Subcommittee (1960-1963).


Lincoln Center: Minutes of the Collaborating Architects, 1956 - 1961

Minutes, notes, memoranda, and reports from thirty-six meetings of the collaborating architects. Some files include supporting visual material, such as photographs of renderings and models. Files also include promotional brochures, photographs, and photostats. The minutes, notes, memoranda, and reports are primarily typescript, and were originally housed in a black spring binder. However, some minutes for 1960 and 1961 were received separately and are photocopies.



Box 18 Folder 5 to 6 Planning Conference Report, 1956 Oct. 2-12

19 page typescript report with accompanying visual documentation. Architects, acousticians, stage designers, consultants, and representatives of the Metropolitan Opera Company, the New York Philharmonic Society, and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Inc. participated in the conference. File includes a photocopy of the report.

Includes H&A proposal for architectural and engineering services (1958), letters concerning the Lincoln Center presentation at the 1959 ACTION (American Council to Improve Our Neighborhoods) meeting, letters regarding the licensing of businesses in the Lincoln Center area (1962), Abramovitz's response to questions from a high school senior for her term paper (1973), and correspondence and drawings for the organ installation at Alice Tully Hall (1974).

Topics covered include financial matters and acoustics. Correspondence between the firms of H&A and Bolt Beranek and Newman, letter to MA from Hugh Bagenal, paper on auditorium acoustics by Russell Johnson of BBN, and other documents relating to acoustics. File includes minutes of Building Committee meetings, press releases, and a gag press release, "Philharmonic Hall Enlarged!" drafted by Arthur Houghton. The reports are numbered 2 (26 June 1963), 3 (16 August 1963), and 4 (12 December 1963). Correspondence consists primarily of letters from Veneklasen to Abramovitz. Consultant Vern O. Knudsen's Report on the Acoustical Improvement Program for Philharmonic Hall dated July 8, 1963 with supplements. Additional reports are dated Nov. 12, 1963 (with cover letter of Nov. 18, 1963) and Nov. 19, 1963. Correspondence consists chiefly of letters from Knudsen to MA. File also includes a summary-analysis of the reports, clippings, handwritten notes, Building Committee meeting minutes, and drafts of new releases. Box 22 Folder 1 Keilholz, 1963-1966, 1968

Contains two reports issued by the Austrian acoustical consultant, Heinrich Keilholz. The first report, Feststellungen der Mangel und Empfehlungen zur Verbesserung der Horsamkeit in der Philharmonic Hall (Examinations of Deficient Acoustics in Philharmonic Hall and Recommendations for Improvement), is dated Nov. 17, 1963. The second report authored by Keilholz is dated Oct. 25, 1965. Here he discusses measures taken to improve the acoustics and an evaluation of those measures. He also includes recommendations for further acoustical and interior decoration improvements. Correspondence is primarily between Abramovitz and Keilholz. File also includes meeting minutes, clippings, and a 1965 Lincoln Center press release. English translations accompany all Germany documents. Box 22 Folder 4 Vincent Rousseau Commentary, 1975

Commentary written by Rousseau, an H&A designer who worked with Leo Bernaek on Philharmonic Hall. Entitled "Inconsistencies in Accounts of the Design of Philharmonic Hall," the commentary is a rebuttal of Leo Beranek's 1975 article, "Changing role of the expert" in The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America (vol. 58, Sept. 1975, p. 547-555).
