Collection of visiting cards of musical artists (composers, vocalists, conductors, etc.) and authors, presidents, and other celebrities of the 19th and 20th centuries, most bearing handwritten messages. There are also photographs and other memorabilia.

Correspondence with authors and other well-known figures, and also manuscripts of her own writings.

The collection is composed of 66 letters from Haggard to various members of his family, primarily to his sister-in-law, Agnes Barber Haggard, who had been his secretary. There are nearly 250 letters addressed to Haggard, to Coulson Kernahan, and to others. Among the correspondents are: James Barrie, Hall Caine, Mrs Patrick Campbell, Joseph Chamberlain, Wilkie Collins, Marie Corelli, Austin Dobson, A. Conan Doyle, J.A. Froude, John Galsworthy, Edmund Gosse, Andrew Lang, C.J. Longman, J.E. Millais, William Morris, Ouida, Grant Richards, Rafael Sabatini, and John Tenniel. There are several manuscripts by Haggard and printed materials relating to him. There are 20 letters from Haggard to his oldest sister, Ella Green, and about 110 to his brother, Col. Andrew C.P. Haggard.

Correspondence, notes, and proofs relating to the publication of VICTORIAN DETECTIVE FICTION compiled by Graham Greene, Eric Osborne, and Dorothy Craigie under the name of Dorothy Glover. Of primary interest is the correspondence from Graham Greene to Eric A. Osborne regarding the bibliography; also in Greene's hand are several notes and corrected galleys for the publication. There are also correspondence and notes by Osborne and Glover, and Greene's secretary Josephine Reid.

Research Materials related to Gift of Eric Sherman (Dec. 2014 and Oct. 2015) of books related to A.C. and E.F. Benson and to Rudyard Kipling Books included 218 volumes related to Bensons and 200 volumes related to Kipling, and were cataloged into the main Library of Congress rare book sequence in 2019-2020.

Letters of Powys to Cyril Clemens of the International Mark Twain Society. Also, three manuscripts, one a "Foreword" written by Powys for a proposed biography of A.E. Housman by Cyril Clemens; and a Powys family genealogy.

Letters of Milne to his agent Curtis Brown, relating largely to Milne's plays, particularly MR. PIM PASSES BY and BROXOPP.

The collection consists of 32 letters from Alan Sillitoe to his friends, the noted calligrapher John Charles Tarr and his wife, Dorothy, which concern Sillitoe's life, work, and interests during his most creative years.

Letters from John Ruskin to his friend and publisher, George Allen. A note in front of volume I states that "Ruskin wrote in all over 1,300 letters to George Allen" of which these are a part. The men were close friends and the correspondence contains both personal matter and that relating to artistic and business matters.

A collection of correspondence, typescripts, proofsheets, pamphlets, periodicals, and memorabilia by or relating to Sir Winston Churchill. Included are files of Daniel Longwell, editor of LIFE from 1946 to 1954, dealing with the serialization of A HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH SPEAKING PEOPLES and TRIUMPH AND TRAGEDY in LIFE. Accompanying the collection is a group of approximately 350 books by or about Churchill. Many are first editions or inscribed copies.

Letters from Jacobs to Cyril Clemens. The letters contain comments on the Mark Twain Society, his work and writings, and other writers, notably A.E. Housman, G.K. Chesterton, Clarence Day, and George Ade. Also, a holograph manuscript of Jacobs"The Castaway;" and three letters from Jacobs to Clarence Winchester, 1929-1933, and two manuscripts.

Letters written to Huebsch, most of which relate to the books presented to him by various authors. There are letters from H.E. Bates, Richard Curle, Edward Garnett, Mitchell Kennerley, Wyndham Lewis, Sean O'Faoláin, Siegfried Sassoon, and Sidney Webb. Also, a box of printed materials by and relating to Huebsch.

Dr. Wolfe drew upon many of the letters and books he collected in writing his books LITERARY SHRINES OF AMERICAN AUTHORS, 1895; A LITERARY PILGRIMAGE AMONG HAUNTS OF BRITISH AUTHORS, 1896; LITERARY HAUNTS AND HOMES, AMERICAN AUTHORS, 1898; and ITERARY RAMBLES AT HOME AND ABROAD, 1900. There is also a miscellaneous file of clippings, notes, and photographs about authors, and a large group of stereoptican slides collected during Wolfe's travels in the northeast states.

Letters to Fletcher, including four letters from Richard Hughes, and twenty-five from Dorothy Leigh Sayers, mostly about the Dante editions which she bought from the Fletchers; seven letters from Samuel Beckett; and letters from the Sitwell brothers primarily concerning items purchased from the Fletchers: Osbert, 142 letters and postcards concerning books purchased, and Sacheverell, 168 letters concerning music covers, engraved writing paper, costume and ballet drawings, etc. purchased as well as books. Also, twenty-one letters and post cards from Eric Gill, who designed and printed a wedding announcement for Mr. Fletcher; and eighteen letters from Will Ransom, dealing with American and English publishers and bookdealers.

Correspondence, manuscripts, memoranda, contracts, and other legal documents, account books, royalty statements and other financial records, photographs, printed materials, and card files of the Watkins Loomis, Inc. literary agency. The papers deal with editorial, financial, and legal aspects of publishing, magazine, theatrical and film rights, and all other personal and professional activities of their American and English clients. Among these clients have been Michael Arlen, Frances Hodgson Burnett, Theodore Dreiser, Ernest Hemingway, Sinclair Lewis, Carson McCullers, Ezra Pound, Ayn Rand, Dorothy Sayers, Gertrude Stein, and Dylan Thomas.

E.M. Forster's Christmas cards to Melville Henry Crane, n.d., and his letters to Walter D'Arcy Cresswell, 1936, and Duncan Grant, 1968. Also, a manuscript of Forster's review of G.M. Trevelyan's A LAYMAN'S LOVE, 1954; a mimeographed typescript of Robert Pocock's radio script"E.M. Forster : A Profile" 1965, and photographs of Forster.

Autograph and typed letters from various literary people to Lawlor. This correspondence is relevant to his book on Katherine Mansfield, THE MYSTERY OF MAATA, 1946, some during his work on the presumably unpublished manuscript of hers"Maata" some later and some more personal. Letters written by and to Harris and his associate, Laurence Oliphant. In addition to the correspondence, these papers include manuscripts of books, miscellaneous biographical materials, and photographs.

Various letters and manuscripts by and about Sir Osbert Sitwell (1892-1969), Dame Edith Sitwell (1887-1964), and Sir Sacheverell Sitwell (1897-). There are 2 notebooks which Dame Edith Sitwell inscribed to Siegfried Sassoon containing drafts of her poem "Gold Coast Customs" as well as numerous other drafts of prose and poems.

Manuscripts, notes, transcripts, photographs, photostats, illustrations, and printed materials of Johnson. These are the research notes and manuscripts for his biographical works on Charles Dickens and Sir Walter Scott. An autograph fragment by Scott is included.

This collection of letters, manuscripts, autographs, and illustrations of English and American authors and statesmen was assembled by George Dunlop. Many of the letters relate to Robert Burns and to the Burns country of Ayrshire. Among the early items are letters from Robert Burns, Samuel Johnson, Hester Thrale Piozzi, Edgar Allan Poe, and Abraham Lincoln.

Graves, Thomas Hardy, Frederick T. Jane, W.E. Norris, Alfred Ollivant, John Pendleton, William H. Rideing, Hall Caine, Prince Peter Kropotkin, Marie Adelaide Belloc Lowndes, Douglas Sladden, and Mary Augusta Ward (Mrs. Humphry Ward).

Letters and manuscripts. The letters are addressed to Miss Rubinstein, an accountant for Waugh's literary agent, A. D. Peters, who also did private typing for him on the side. These letters are concerned with manuscripts he was sending her for that purpose. Also included are the manuscripts for two of Waugh's essays

Letters and manuscripts of Evelyn Waugh, including letters written to Sr. Jaime Potenze, and a series of eight pen-and-ink drawings done by the novelist for the limited edition of BLACK MISCHIEF, ca. 1932. The scenario for the MGM film of his THE LOVED ONE (1966), screenplay by Terry Southern and Christopher Isherwood, has been added. Also, thirteen letters from Evelyn Gardner Waugh to John Maxse.

Letters written to Frank Topham, ca. 1879; letters from various 19th century artists including Wyke Bayliss, G. Bowers Edwards, and Carl Haag; letters to Jerome Milkman, 1925-1958; letters to Howes Norris, 1908-1930; letters from various 20th century artists including Sir D.Y. Cameron, Sir John Collier, and Sir Gerald Kelley; and letters and a few manuscripts and documents of various American and British authors. Also, a group of French documents and letters from immediately following the French Revolution, 1793-1812, mostly dealing with military and governmental matters. Correspondents and signers include Lazare Nicolas Marguerite Carnot, Jean Jacques Regis Cambacérès, Jean Etienne Championnet, and Jean Baptiste Michel Saladin. Letters, 1814-1832, written to United States ministers to France including William Harris Crawford, Albert Gallatin, William Cabell River, and Nathaniel Niles. The correspondents include Elie Decazes, Antoine René Charles Mathurin, comte de La Forest, and Armand Emmanuel du Plesis, duc de Richelieu. The letters deal with a variety of diplomatic matters such as the exchange of war prisoners and refuge for the ship DECATUR.

Correspondents include Eleanor Cropper Acland, Dame Eva Isabella Henrietta Hanbury-Racy Anstruther, William T. Field (11 letters), Agnes M. Mather, Marjorie Peice, Erman Jesse Ridgway, Lilias Guthrie Rodd, Humphrey Ward, Rowland Edmund Prothero, Robert F. Wilson, and Butler Wood (13 letters).

Letters written to Havelock Ellis, including several drafts of his replies, and a few letters to his executrix, Mrs. Françoise Lafitte-Cyon. Nearly all of the letters relate to to Ellis' writings and their influence, as well as the work of his correspondents in the fields of sex studies, pornography, birth control, and pacifism. Correspondents include Henri Barbusse, André Breton, Elie Faure, Robert J. Gibbings, Julian Huxley, Desmond MacCarthy, Bronislaw Malinowski, Naomi Mitchison, John Middleton Murray, Henry S. Salt, and Marie Stopes.

Primarily oil portraits of 18th century literary figures. There are also engravings, and pen and ink and pencil sketches. Among the literary figures are portraits of Samuel Butler, Lord Byron, Thomas Carlyle; Colley Cibber; Charles Dickens; John Evelyn; John Foxe; David Garrick; Thomas Gray; Charles Lamb; Sir Thomas More; Sir Walter Raleigh; Samuel Richardson; Richard B. Sheridan; Alfred, Lord Tennyson; William M. Thackeray; and others. There is also a portrait by Blanche Ames of George A. Plimpton. Among the artists represented in the collection are James Maubert, Frederick Sandys, and William Hogarth (attrib.)

Letters and manuscripts of English and American authors collected by Gilvarry. Included are a letter from Arnold Bennett, London, 1923, to Miss Renard; a poem "The Sea Bird to the Wave" by Padraic Colum, 1916; an essay of D.H. Lawrence, 1926?; a letter from Ezra Pound, London, ca. 1914, to Seumas O'Sullivan; a letter from George Santayana, Rome, 1927, to E.W. Titus; and a photograph with signature of Herman Melville, New York, 1885.

Correspondence, manuscripts and illustrations concerned with Symons' two most important historical works on the detective story, The Great Detectives, 1981, and the 1985 revised edition of Bloody Murder, which received the Mystery Writers of America Edgar Allan Poe Award for the 1972 first edition. Most of the correspondence is concerned with The Great Detectives, including 2 letters from Frederic Dannay, 2 letters from Lady Gregory Bromet (daughter of A. Conan Doyle), and 1 letter from Tom Adams with drafts of his illustrations for this book. There is also a letter from Canadian author Derrick Murdoch, founder of Crime Writers of Canada.

The collection of D.H. Lawrence material contains two book-length manuscripts, the typescripts of Sea and Sardinia and The Boy in the Bush, both with manuscript corrections in Lawrence's hand. The typescript for The Boy In The Bush is probably the manuscript from which the book was printed. Other Lawrence manuscripts include "The Future of the Novel," and Chapter 13 of Aaron's Rod. Correspondents include Thomas Seltzer, Johathan Cape, Mrs. Nancy Henry, and Lady Ottoline Morrell. The collection also contains three watercolor drawings made by Lawrence for the jacket of the English edition of The Plumed Serpent. Related printed material is also included. The John Steinbeck material is comprised of one letter, and proofs for thirteen of Steinbeck's works, including East Of Eden and Of Mice and Men. Also included are a printed biography and photographs, and printed ephemera relating to many of Steinbeck's works. There are books inscribed to Alfred and Clarisse Hellman. This collection also contains some correspondence of Alfred Hellman and some letters collected by Dr. Morton Pepper.

A collection of seventeen letters and one manuscript of Coppard. The letters were written to Cyril Clemens and deal with short story writing, poetry, contemporary writers, and political figures. The holograph manuscript in the collection is of Coppard's poem "Rascal Song." Also, nineteen letters and postcards to Coppard's brother, George A. Coppard.

Mostly testimonial letters from satisfied clients of A.P. Watt, praising his services. Many of the letters were published in promotional brochures. Two of these books, COLLECTION OF LETTERS ADDRESSED TO A.P. WATT BY VARIOUS WRITERS (London, 1893) & LETTERS ADDRESSED TO A.P. WATT (London, 1894), are included in the collection. There were other editions published in 1889, 1898, 1899, 1924, 1929, etc.

Correspondence, manuscripts, notes, notebooks, printed materials relating to Woodring's scholarly activities. The bulk of the collection is material relating to his editing of Coleridge's Table Talk for the Collected Colleridge. There is also material relating to his teaching career, as well as his many professional activities. In addition to the manuscript material, there are 197 books presented to Woodring by former students, faculty members, and others

Correspondence, manuscripts, documents, photographs and printed material of the English poet and critic, Edmund Blunden, documenting his personal and professional activity. Blunden's letters to his second wife, Sylva Norman, and his secretary, Aki Hayashi, are particularly well represented. Also included are many letters addressed to Blunden by eminent literary figures such as John Betjeman, George Orwell, Siegfried Sassoon, Stephen Spender, and Henry Williamson. Other literary correspondents are Adrian Bell, Joyce Cary, Richard Church, C. Day Lewis, Walter de la Mare, Graham Greene, H.D., William Plomer, Kathleen Raine, and Leonard Woolf. A substantial portion of the cataloged correspondence contains drawings, verse fragments and poems by Blunden which have been analyzed. Also present are eleven of Blunden's diaries, 1936-1967, which contain drafts of a number of poems. In addition, the collection contains a small number of autograph manuscripts of Edmund Blunden's literary works.

Correspondence, photographs, and printed material by and relating to Benjamin Disraeli. There are nine letters from Disraeli to various persons including Sir Charles Adderly, First Baron Norton; the Duke of Northumberland; and Sir Henry Edwards. The letters span the dates 1849 to 1879. Also included are two letters from Disraeli's father, Isaac D'Israeli, 1766-1848, to Stephen Weston, 1805, and Edward Moxon, 1833, and a post card from William Ewart Gladstone. A letter from William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne to Sir William Owen (1837) has been removed from an extra-illustrated edition of "The Letters of Runnymede" (London, 1836) and cataloged for the collection.

A collection of letters, engravings, prints, portraits, caricatures, other illustrations, and printed materials relating to Charles Dickens. Among the letters is an autograph letter by Dickens and copies of several Dickens letters to the publishers Lea & Blanchard. Many of the illustrations are portraits of Dickens while others are illustrations for his novels and stories, including numerous illustrations of scenes from dramatic versions of his works as well as some playbills for these productions.

A collection of letters and manuscripts of English and American authors, including one item from each of the following: Pearl S. Buck, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Thomas De Quincey, Thomas Frognall Dibden, Charles Dickens, William Ewart Gladstone, Edmund Gosse, Hester Thackeray Ritchie Fuller, Rockwell Kent, Charles Kingsley, Edward George Bulwer Lytton, John Masefield, Clinton Scollard, William Wordsworth and Walt Whitman. In addition, there are 8 letters from Samuel Rogers (1763-1855) to Mr. and Mrs. Horace Twiss (Annie Sterky Greenwood Twiss), photographs of Alan and Margaret Kempner and miscellaneous Kempner items.

Letters of Jackson to Montgomery Evans, an American book collector, discussing the works of Arthur Machen, book collecting and other literary topics, London restaurants, and wartime conditions in London. Also, photographs, pamphlets, clippings, and two eulogies of Jackson.

There are also ten volumes of his diaries covering the years from 1918 to 1981 and his autobiographical manuscripts: THE OCTOPUS OF LOVE; THE ANSWER TO LIFE IS NO; BLACK SAHARA; COFFEE FOR LAURA; PRINTERS' PIE; THE FRAIL SCREEN; and NO MONEY FOR DREAMS, as well as many unpublished poems in manuscript. Correspondence, manuscripts, documents, financial records, photographs, drawings, engravings, and printed materials of Benjamin. The personal and business papers concern Benjamin's publishing and bookselling company, his numerous benefactions, the disposal of his collections, and many printed catalogs for his company, 1883-1940. The two major correspondents are the business and financial records for the printing, binding, and extensive promotion through a network of agents of Stedman's A LIBRARY OF AMERICAN LITERATURE FROM THE EARLIEST SETTLEMENT TO THE PRESENT TIME; new ed. (New York, W.E. Benjamin, 1894). There are also letters, manuscripts, documents, and drawings of English literary figures collected by Benjamin. Among these are six letters of George Eliot, 47 letters and six manuscripts of John Ruskin, and three letters and one manuscript of Joseph Mallord Turner, with four letters relating to the artist. In addition there ten drawings and watercolors by Ruskin.
