Biographical / Historical
Christian Bernhard Tauchnitz (1816-1895). Leipzig printer who began the Tauchnitz "Collection of British and American Authors" in 1842. The reprints formed the first popular series in Europe, and were widely read by English-speaking tourists. More than 5,400 titles were published over almost a century, until the stock was destroyed during the war.
