This collection consists of the correspondence and administrative records of the University Extension's Home Study Division, which offered not-for-credit courses by mail. The records include communication with faculty members, students, and University administration (Buildings and Grounds, Office of the President, Office of the Secretary, Office of the Registrar, etc.). They document the Home Study division's outreach or promotional efforts (advertising, partnerships with other institutions), operational records (course fees, registrations, mailing services, office supplies), policy matters (academic credit, prison students, high school classes and the New York State Regents exams) and many requests for information from potential students, nationwide and from abroad. In addition to the short-lived Home Study program, there are records of other adult education experiments and initiatives at the University Extension such as courses by radio, extramural courses (held off-campus, across the East Coast), and Guidance Study (a replacement to Home Study). These are the administrative records held in the Office of the Director, mostly from the end of the Home Study experiment and organized alphabetically. The records do not include much about the origins of the Home Study at Columbia. They are more closely related to the evolution of the program and the continued interest in correspondence education after the program was discontinued. There is also an extensive collection of materials documenting other home study and adult education efforts around the country, from correspondence with individual programs to materials from national associations.

This collection documents the life and career of Edgar Allen Tafel: New York architect, Frank Lloyd Wright historian, and one of the original apprentices of the Taliesin Fellowship from 1932. The collection primarily documents Tafel's professional activities and his later independent architectural career which was most prominent from 1965-1985. The collection is made up of nine series: Personal Papers, Correspondence, Writings, Professional Papers, Office Records, Project Records, Photographs and Slides, Audio-Visual Material, and Printed Material.

Collection of eight automatons. Samuel "Sam" Zell. Billionaire investor and chairman of Equity Group Investments, an investment firm focused on transportation, real-estate, energy, media and healthcare industries. Mr. Zell has 675 automatons made each year and gives them out as New Year's presents. The automatons are freestanding sculptural objects that represent a different topic each year. They are charged with an AC adaptor and then started by the push of a button. They begin by playing a new year's message from Sam Zell and then continue with a song parody, generally about the economy (although the 2004 automaton is about the election). The automatons move at the same time as they play the message and song.
This group of approximately 1,000 letters from the papers of Hamilton Fish, Sr. relates to the business, functioning, and activities of Columbia College in the 19th century. The letters include those addressed to Fish and those written by him. The earliest material bears on Fish's activities and interests at about the time he graduated from Columbia, but the majority of the letters fall into the latter part of his life, many being written by and to Fish as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Columbia College. The collection includes correspondence with presidents Charles King, F.A.P. Barnard, and Seth Low of Columbia College, also with Edmund Bailey, Charles Davies, Charles W. Harper, William M. Sloan, William C. Schermerhorn, and others. The majority of the letters are original manuscripts and typescripts, but many of the letters from Fish are photostatic and typed copies. Most of the letters are tipped onto manila sheets. Included are two diaries of Mr. Fish's European travels, 1856-1857. There is also a box of printed materials relating primarily to the settlement of the Alabama Claims.
Low writes Fish suggesting selling the Wheelock property, investing the proceeds in land upon the West Side nearer the Park which would produce a current income as well as increasing in value.
Barnard is sorry that Fish thinks his scheme is visionary. The mistake of 1872 was because the Trustees failed to carry into effect the plan of which it was a part. It was not designed to use the property as an investment. The Trustees, however, began erecting costly structures two years later. This upset the whole plan. Had Columbia built on the Wheelock property in 1872 the present site would have paid for that property and would have paid for the first college building, or it might have been retained and added $30,000 a year for income. It was not lack of wisdom but lack of persistence in the Trustees.
[COPY] Fish writes to Barnard. It is about 12 years since that the urgency of prospective necessities led to the expenditure of some $375,000 for land on which the College has had the privilege of paying taxes, repairs and commissions ever since. An experience of more than 50 years has led Fish to the belief that unproductive and unused real estate, under mortgage, is an unprofitable investment. Interest and taxes are terrible cormorants. An account, properly stated, of the Wheelock property would show that it now stands at more than $800,000 for the College. Another such purchase to meet the prospective needs of the College would, Fish thinks, be fatal. Fish thinks the buildings now erected or in contemplation will be ample for all the needs of the College for several years. To expend $800,000 now for land not immediately needed would not appear to Fish to be prudent.
This collection contains photocopies of the Columbia College, and later Columbia University, President's annual reports from 1865-1881 and 1887-1948. The reports include fact and figures (enrollment, degrees conferred, tuition, expenses, gifts, etc.) and topical discussions (co-education, new degree programs, higher education and liberal arts education, current events, etc.).
(While the McGill reports include the members of the board, enrollment figures, and a "year in review" section, these are mostly financial reports. The bulk of the publication is the facts and figures related to the investment, financial statements and expenditures and the accompanying exhibits and schedules.)
