Letters from King to Dr. Daniel Kilham of Newburyport, Mass. The letters refer to the personal affairs of the two men and to a large extent to the matters of contemporary diplomacy and politics. Among the subjects touched upon are the peace treaty with England, the Barbary powers, Spanish remonstrance against U.S. navigation of the Mississippi, and Mr. Adams' reception at the British court. Four of the letters bear manuscript copies of Kilham's reply.

The most important parts of this collection is his primary longitudinal research data, his efforts at institutional and capacity building at Teachers College (and Columbia University, as the former head of the Institute of African Studies), and his teaching materials.

These documents were printed by Franklin at the press he established in Passy, France, while representing the new United States government in Paris. Franklin went all out to create forms which would represent the new American nation as a respectable power. For these forms, he used a sloped Roman type and fancy capitals which were unique to his press, and had the paper made to order (in England!) in the smooth wove style still little known of in France, with a strip of marbling down the center of the sheet. The sheet would have originally been twice the size you see here; it held the promissory note in duplicate. The document is "indentured," or cut apart in a wavy line through the marbling, making each copy of the promissory note (for the very large sums of money the US was borrowing from France) unique — so it would be impossible for either side to substitute a different document with, perhaps, a different sum owed.

Correspondence, manuscripts and page proofs. The correspondence includes 12 letters from Roland Barthes, 1963-1978, concerning French literature in French and American universities, and one letter from Charles Maurras and his comments on Roudiez's Columbia University dissertation (1950), CHARLES MAURRAS: GENESIS OF A REACTION; also a typescript of the translation and revision of the dissertation, MAURRAS JUSQU'À L'ACTION FRANC̦AISE, published in Paris in 1957. In addition, there are several typescript drafts and page proofs all with holograph corrections for Roudiez's translations of Julia Kristeva's DESIRE IN LANGUAGE (New York: Columbia University Press, 1980) and POWERS OF HORROR (New York: Columbia University Press, 1982); and the typescript for Roudiez's book FRENCH FICTION TODAY(New Brunswick: Rutgers University Press, 1972)

Drafts of twenty letters from Fouché to the Austrian statesman Prince Klemens Lothar von Metternich. These letters, written near the end of Foucheé's life and during the opening years of what has been called the "Age of Metternich" represent their author's efforts to regain some of his earlier standing by ingratiating himself to Europe's man of the hour.

Sproge's memoirs are in the form of a 215 page bound manuscript, "Zapiski inzhenera," which is dated Zurich 1963. In his memoirs, Sproge discusses the 1913-1941 period, beginning with his training as a communications engineer. He describes the 1917 Revolution, his post-Revolutionary life in Kharḱov, and his travels through the Crimea. Sproge chronicles his experiences in the White Army with which he traveled to Rostov, Ekaterinodar and Novorossiĭsk. He then describes economic development during the twenties in the Ukraine, notably his association with electrification and water-power plants. The memoirs conclude with a description of Central Asia and Leningrad during the 1930's and Sproge's emigration in 1941.

Typescript diaries, with holograph correction detailing Theodore Abel's daily personal and professional life with his comments on local, national and world events. Recorded are his daily activities and his thoughts on all aspects of the human conditions: history, literature, the arts, religion, science, politics, sociology, etc. The journals are rich in details about the Columbia University Sociology Department and related departments.

August Trenkmann purchased the lots located between Centre, Broome and Lafayette Streets (originally Elm Street) in New York City at different times during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Trenkmann constructed buildings on five of the seven lots. This small collection represents two of those buildings, both designed by DeLemos & Cordes, Architects. For the 7-story factory building at Nos. 247-249 Centre Street and 167-171 Elm Street, the collection consists of Specifications of the Iron Work and Materials (1890). For the 7-story office building on the southwest corner of Broome and Centre Streets (403 Broome Street), the collection includes Specification for the Steam Power, Heating and Ventilating Apparatus and Article of Agreement between Trenkmann and Jackson Architectural Iron Works (1895).
