This series contains address books, awards, cards, letters, periodicals, photographs, pornography, printed books, programs, and unprinted manuscripts.
Subseries VII.1: Photographs, 1950-2020
This subseries contains photographs from throughout Johnson's life, including his childhood in North Carolina and Washington D.C. and his retirement years in New York. The vast majority of these photographs are unlabeled. Negatives for some of these photographs are housed here. Also found in this subseries is a small collection of gay pornography. Johnson was not publicly out during his lifetime, and it seems likely pornographic material and some correspondence may have been removed from the collection before arriving at Columbia. A few pornographic birthday cards from friends remained in the collection and have been housed here rather than in Subseries 3.
Subseries VII.2: Address Books, Undated
This subseries contains eight address books containing contact information for Johnson's friends, family, and professional acquaintances.
Subseries VII.3: Correspondence, Undated
This subseries contains cards and letters written to and from Johnson, including some letters from Alvin Ailey while on tour in Europe.
