Series II: Education, 1927-1994

This series, arranged alphabetically by subject or title, encompasses two subseries outlining Arthur Krim's academic career: II.1: Mount Vernon High School, Mt. Vernon, NY, 1924–1927 and II.2: Columbia University, 1928–1994.

Subseries II.2 is further divided into three additional subseries: II.2.1: Columbia College, 1928-1990; II.2.2: Columbia Law School, 1930-1989; and II.2.3: Board of Trustees of Columbia University, 1966-1994.

Subseries II.1: Mount Vernon High School--Mount Vernon, NY, 1927

Subseries II.1 is arranged chronologically.

Krim received his primary and secondary education in Mount Vernon, NY. In January 1923, he entered Mt. Vernon High School and graduated in 1927. His high school extracurricular activities included the presidency of the graduating class, captaincy of the cross-country team, member of the track team, valedictorian of his class, membership on the editorial board of the school magazine, and the presidency of the debating society.

Subseries II.2: Columbia University, 1928-1994



Box 51 Subseries II.2.1: Columbia College, 1928-1990

This subseries is arranged alphabetically by subject or title and includes such archival materials as Arthur Krim's commencement program, diploma, graduation portrait, and undergraduate essays.

Krim graduated from Columbia College, class of 1930, with a B.A. degree. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and awarded the Gold King's Crown for extracurricular activities in 1929. He headed the Columbia debating team, graduated among the top five members of his class, and was awarded the Marion Elsberg prize for excellence in history, which is given by the college to a senior who has demonstrated excellence in modern history.

Subseries II.2.2: Columbia Law School, 1930-1989

This subseries is arranged alphabetically by subject or title.

In 1932, Krim graduated first in his class from Columbia Law School with an LL.B. At Columbia Law, Krim served as editor-in-chief of the Columbia Law Review (1931–1922). He also received the Charles Bathgate Beck Prize for excellence in real estate law, following a first-year scholastic record that was the highest in the history of Columbia Law School up to that time. After graduation, Krim participated in the charter revision program for the State of New York. Soon afterwards, he joined the firm Phillips and Nizer.

Subseries II.2.3: Board of Trustees of Columbia University, 1966-1994

This subseries is arranged alphabetically by subject or title.

The files comprise such important matters as the presidential succession search (1979–1980) and the inauguration of Michael I. Sovern (1931–2020) as the 17th President of Columbia University (1980–1993); the real estate arrangements between the university and Rockefeller Center and its subsidiary Radio City Music Hall; and Columbia's divestment from companies doing business with apartheid South Africa.

Krim served as a Trustee of Columbia (1967–1982) and as Chairman of the Board of Trustees (1977–1982). On May 19, 1982, he was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws. On October 4, 1982, Krim was designated trustee and chairman emeritus.
