Research in Contemporary Cultures records, 1939-1962, bulk 1947-1952

This collection contains the records of the Research in Contemporary Cultures project (1947-1953) begun by Ruth Benedict at Columbia University, and carried out by Margaret Mead at Columbia University and the American Museum of Natural History after Benedict's death in 1948. The records of three successor projects, Studies in Soviet Culture (1948-1952), Studies in Contemporary Culture (1951-1952), and and Study Program of Human Health and the Ecology of Man (1954-1956) are also included. The purpose of these projects was anthropological study at a distance of global cultures inaccessible for direct observation, in an attempt to establish the "national character" of countries of geopolitical interest to the United States government.

The alphabetical files series comprises the bulk of the collection and contains Golden's files related to all aspects of his professional work, including records related to the many boards and advisory councils on which he sat, including the Carnegie Institute of Washington, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Museum of Natural History. These files include correspondence, reports, and related files. The series also includes records relating to the Black Rock Forest Consortium, which Golden founded.

Pliny Earle Goddard American Indian notebooks, 1901-1929

Thirty-three notebooks containing transcriptions of Native American texts by Pliny Earle Goddard, and some English translations. While some of the material is of a primarily linguistic nature, much is folkloric in nature. The collection contains eleven notebooks of Mescalero Apache texts; three notebooks of Pomo, Maple Creek, and Mad River tribes and four of the Coquille, Chasta Costa, and Tututni languages (Native American tribes from the Pacific Coast); five notebooks of Navajo texts; and ten notebooks of Sarsi texts. It also includes 23 pages of notes on Chasta Costa attributed to Edward Sapir.

James S. Russell (b. 1952. Seattle, WA) is an architectural writer, critic and journalist who lives and works in New York City. He is currently the architecture columnist for Bloomberg News, and from 1998 to 2005, he was an editor of Architectural Record magazine. Russell also contributes to numerous other publications, including the the New York Times, the Harvard Design Magazine, among others. A registered architect in New York, he practiced architecture with firms in New York City, Philadelphia, and Seattle before becoming a full-time writer. Russell received his Master of Architecture (MArch) at Columbia University in 1980.
