The files of Curtis Brown, Ltd. literary agency include correspondence with authors, publishers, and other agents and deal with the editing and publishing of trade and textbooks, serial rights, reprints, dramatic rights, translations and foreign rights, promotion and copyright registration. For each author there are contracts, royalty statements, tax statements, and other financial materials. There is also a contract file, including cancellations and related correspondence, from 1914 to 1988. Among the cataloged correspondents are: Louis S. Auchincloss, W.H. Auden, Erle Stanley Gardner, Robert Graves, Ogden Nash, Ayn Rand, and Sloan Wilson.

Correspondence from clients about placing their work. Among the authors are: Michael Arlen, Nancy Astor, Beverley Nichols, Cecil Roberts, and Alec Waugh. There is also a typescript concert program for The Amphion Glee Club in 1907, signed by 58 members who were orthopedic surgeons.

Professional and personal correspondence, manuscripts and notes for his many publications in the social sciences and Renaissance studies, drafts and notes for his THE IDEA OF USURY and writings about Max Weber, other papers collected during his teaching career, and materials for the many professional conferences which he attended and for the academic associations and societies in which he was active.

The collection consists of the editorial and production archives of Random House, Inc. from its founding in 1925 to the 1990s. The correspondence and editorial files include many of the prominent novelists and short story writers from 20th-century American and European literature: Saul Bellow; Erskine Caldwell; Truman Capote; William Faulkner; Sinclair Lewis; André Malraux; Gertrude Stein and Thornton Wilder. Among the poets there are files for W. H. Auden; Allen Ginsberg; Robinson Jeffers; Robert Lowell; and Stephen Spender. In the area of theater there are files for Maxwell Anderson; Moss Hart; Lillian Hellman; Eugene O'Neill; and Tennessee Williams. Random House transacted business with many fine presses and noted typographers and the archives contain files for Nonesuch Press, Grabhorn Press and Golden Cockerel Press, as wll as for Bruce Rogers, Valenti Angelo, and Edwin, Jane, and Robert Grabhorn.

The papers include correspondence, manuscripts, documents, photographs, and printed materials. Among the correspondents are Boris Bakhmeteff, Pavel Mili︠u︡kov, Ivan Shmelev, and Petr Wrangel. There is a manuscript of General Denikin's entitled, "Ocherki russkoĭ smuty," and of some of his other writings. Subject files deal with the Civil War and the emigration. Extensive printed materials include General Denikin's library and a collection of chiefly Russian emigre periodicals. Boxes 51, 52, 56, 61 have been integrated in the SEEC periodical collection.

Also, correspondence, 1891-1946, between Butler and presidents of the United States including William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Correspondence, clippings, notebooks, and photographs. The principal files are not complete. The correspondence covers the years 1920 to 1941, and the scrapbooks of clippings begin in 1927 and end in 1945. Nevertheless, many of Knickerbocker's reports, cables, and interviews, some unpublished, are present and provide information concerning news events, primarily in Europe, and the operations of his office. Correspondence with fellow members of the press is extensive and interesting. There are a few original manuscripts in the collection, but none pertain to Knickerbocker's seven books. Also, photographs relating to Knickerbocker's works on Russian trade and the Five Year Plan, and of Knickerbocker himself. The correspondence includes letters from Winston Churchill, Randolph Churchill, Evelyn Waugh, Leon Trotsky, Sir Josiah Stamp, Ernestine Evans, Walter Duranty, and John W. Wheeler-Bennett.

Malamuth translated such works as Trotsky's "Stalin" and Valentin Kataev's "Kvadratura kruga." After World War II, he worked successively for the American Joint Distribution Committee in Europe and the Middle East, the Voice of America, and Radio Liberty. These papers reflect many aspects of Malamuth's career. Among the correspondents are Max Eastman, Eugene Lyons, Adolphe Menjou, and Lev Trotsky. There are one or two items each from Ili︠́a︡ Erenburg, Evengiĭ Kataev, Anatoliĭ Lunacharskiĭ, Alekseĭ Tolstoĭ, and Evgeniĭ Zami︠a︡tin. Manuscripts include a signed typescript of Boris Pilńi︠a︡k's "Volga vpadaet v Kaspiĭskoe more," a film scenario by Viktor Shklovskiĭ, and plays by I︠U︡riĭ Olesha, Tolstoĭ, and Zami︠a︡tin. There are photographs of David Ben-Gurion, Bela Kun, Lev Kamenev, Vladimir Lenin, and Grigoriĭ Zinovév. There are also photographs from Soviet Russia ca. 1920, and some about the resettlement of the Adenese Jews to Israel. Subject files deal with the publication of Trotsky's "Stalin," the American Joint Distribution Committee, the Voice of America, and Radio Liberty.

The correspondence covers the years from his study at Columbia to his death in Bangkok. Among the cataloged correspondence are: Daniel Berrigan, Mark Van Doren, Luis Somoza, Jacque Maritain, Aldous Huxley, James Laughlin, Robert Lax, Grover Cleveland Smith, John Howard Griffin, William Henry Shannon and Victoria Ocampo. The extensive manuscript collection was assembled primarily by Sister Thérèse Lentfoehr, Mark Van Doren, and Robert Shepherd. Among the more significant manuscripts are: corrected typescript of THE SEVEN STOREY MOUNTAIN; fragments of his NOVITIATE JOURNAL; notebooks and journals used in THE SIGN OF JONAS; numerous draft of poems; most of his lecture and conference notes which he used while serving as master of scholastics and, later, master of novices. There is an extensive collection of mimeographed articles, many inscribed to Sister Thérèse Lentfoehr; four watercolors by his father, Owen Merton, and many humorous and devotional drawings by Merton; many photographs of Merton, as well as photographs taken by Merton. There is an audio cassette of the radio play by Bruce Stewart entitled ME AND MY SHADOW, produced by the BBC in 1989. This includes 4 daybooks, a notebook of dreams, a notebook of poems, the manuscripts of "Der Kunstler;" (2) Correspondence between Freud and Rank between 1906-1924, including the controversy over THE TRAUMA OF BIRTH. 40 a.l.s. from Freud and typed copies from Rank, with a few letters to and from Ferenczi (3) Copies and some originals of the circular letters by members of the inner circle, Ernest Jones, Abraham, Eitingon, Ferenczi, Rank and Freud, 1920-1924 (4) Original handwritten manuscripts, typed copies, notes and corrections of Rank's major works (5) Rank's own listing and comments on his writings and publications (to 1930) (6) Rank's published works--20 titles.

The papers contain 273 drafts, manuscripts, and typescripts representing every genre in which Ms. Sophie Kerr worked along with correspondence, book artwork, and photographs. In addition, it includes 12 book-length manuscripts, the earliest being Love at Large, a novel published in 1916. The collection also holds books written by Sophie Kerr and volumes inscribed to her from her personal library.
