Correspondence, manuscripts, and records relating to the career of Mary E. Richmond. The papers cover Miss Richmond's social work career in Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York where whe served as Director of the Charity Organization Dept. of the Russell Sage Foundation. Her efforts were directed toward the reorganization and introduction of new methods, including the case method. Also contains childhood memorabilia and an 1821 genealogy.

These include over four hundred letters to Alexander, as well as miscellaneous letters and telegrams; some of his manuscripts and notes; business records of his law firm; military documents of the western divisions of the Confederate Army; copybooks and letter books; and complete and partial newspapers and clippings from the various Southern newspapers (in particular THE SAVANNAH REPUBLICAN, the DAILY DISPATCH of Richmond, and the ADVERTISER AND REGISTER of Mobile) which carried Alexander's dispatches.

This comprehensive communal archive of the Sephardic and Ashkenazic Jewish community provides an invaluable window into the day-to-day proceedings and official communal interactions, both within the membership of the community itself, as well as with other Jewish communities in Holland, and across the European continent. Religious functionaries, such as Rabbis and religious court judges, as well as lay leaders are represented within this archival collection.

The General Manuscript Collection is an artificial collection of correspondence, diaries, lecture notes, class work, essays, administrative documents, minutes, and other documents collected by the Rare Book & Manuscript Library. Single items or very small collections are generally classified as part of the general manuscript collection rather than assigned an individual manuscript number. Additionally, small additions to existing RBML manuscript collections may be classified as part of the General Manuscript Collection.

Materials includes daily newspaper strip art, Sunday newspaper strip art, single-panel cartoons, comic book pages, and related comics material, such as printing plates and ephemera.

Also, THE CITIZEN WRITER IN RETROSPECT, a two-volume oral history of Maltz done by the University of California, Los Angeles.
