The collection chiefly concerns American claims against Soviet Russia, and the currency of Estonia and other successor states. The collection contains a 1928 document signed by George F. Kennan. The manuscripts include essays and memoranda concerning currency exchange, tax laws and a number of American court cases involving financial affairs immediately after the 1917 revolution. There are subject files relating to diplomatic claims concerning debts, and the Soviet-Estonian peace conference of 1920. Among the printed materials are clippings and various American statutes and laws.

Correspondence, speeches, speech materials, news clippings, subject files, audio and videotapes relating to the professional activity of Arthur Levitt, Jr. The papers and audiovisual material deal primarily with his tenure as the Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (1993-2001), but also contain earlier records, including some materials relating to Levitt's school years at the Polytechnic Preparatory Country Day School and at Williams College, and his work at Hayden Stone, the American Stock Exchange, and the New York Economic Development Corporation, and his advocacy of the National Endowment of the Arts during the 1991-1992 funding controversy. These papers also contain materials relating to his father, Arthur Levitt, Sr., who served for 24 years as New York State Comptroller.

Office files of two former heads of the Columbia University Libraries' Reference Department. The files of Isadore Mudge, 1930-1937, 1940, and those of Constance M. Winchell, 1940-1945 and 1947-1959. The files are chiefly inter-office memoranda with other librarians and administrative memoranda for the department. There is some correspondence. Also, a file of Reference Department annual reports, 1904-1940.

Minutes, correspondence, annual reports, press releases, financial records, photographs, memorabilia, audiovisual, digital and printed materials document the philanthropic activities and administration of the Carnegie Corporation of New York. The collection is actively growing, primarily through regular document transfers from the Carnegie Corporation of New York. Andrew Carnegie's biographical information and personal philanthropic activity can be found in Series VII. In addition, his pre-1911 gifts, most notably his donations for libraries and church organs, can be found on microfilm (Series II), in the Home Trust Company Records (VI.A), and Financial Record Books (I.C.1). Grant files (Series III.A), which comprise the bulk of the collection) provide information on projects and institutions founded, endowed or supported by the Corporation. The Special Initiatives series (Series IV) contains the records of task forces, commissions and councils, formed by the Corporation mostly during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s to address specific issues. The Corporation's records include those of other Carnegie philanthropic organizations (Series VI), including the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Home Trust Company, both of which shared staff, officers, and office space with the Corporation for a period of time.

Select files pre-date the firm's establishment because some clients of Harold Matson Company, Inc. became clients of Don Congdon Associates, Inc. The cataloged correspondence include: Ray Bradbury, Lillian Hellman, William Manchester, William Shirer, William Styron, and Francois Truffaut.

They include material dating from the decades prior to the establishment of the settlement which shed light on the philosophy and motivation of its founders, and offer a unique view of the first wave of the settlement house movement in America. The records document social conditions, demographic change, political activity and philanthropy in New York City. Addresses by East Side House founder Everett P. Wheeler, included in Series I, document his family history and career as a lawyer and civic reformer prior to the founding of East Side House. Wheeler's correspondence details his role in establishing the settlement and managing it during its first decades.

Correspondence and manuscripts of his mother, Elizabeth Clementine Dodge Stedman Kinney (1810-1889), poet and diarist, and of his granddaughter, Laura Stedman Gould (1881-1941), author and editor. Also, editions of Stedman's LIBRARY OF AMERICAN LITERATURE including printed materials relating to the marketing; and an album of Civil War photographs by Mathew Brady, inscribed by the photographer to Laura H.W. Professional and personal files including Armstrong's correspondence with professional associations, other engineers, and friends, his research notes, circuit diagrams, lectures, articles, legal papers, and other related materials. Of his many inventions and developments, the most important are: 1) the regenerative or feedback circuit, 1912, the first amplified radio reception, 2) the superheterodyne circuit, 1918, the basis of modern radio and radar, 3) superregeneration, 1922, a very simple, high-power receiver now used in emergency mobile service, and 4) frequency modulation - FM, 1933, static-free radio reception of high fidelity. More than half the files concern his many lawsuits, primarily with Radio Corporation of America, over infringement of the Armstrong patents. Litigation continued until 1967. Other files deal with his work in the Marcellus Hartley Research Laboratory at Columbia University, 1913-1935, and with the American Expeditionary Forces in France during World War I, his Air Force contracts for communications development, Army research during World War II, the Radio Club of America, the Institute of Radio Engineers, FM development at his radio station at Alpine, N.J., the use of FM in television, his involvement in Federal Communications Commission hearings and legislation, and his work with the Zenith Radio Corporation. Ther collection contains typescript manuscripts with handwritten corrections of Cantor's novels"Enemy in the Mirror" (N.Y.: Crown Books, 1977) and "Love Letters" (N.Y.: Crown Books, 1980); printed works composed by Gallery 33 of the Composing Room, which Cantor headed from 196l to 1971; and articles by Cantor from various magazines, including "Esquire" and "Coronet". Also included are typescript manuscripts of "The Rite" (N.Y.: Zebra Books, 1979) and "The Nest" (N.Y.: Zebra Books, 1980), novels written by Cantor under the pseudonym Gregory A. Douglas. Series II of the collection contains 59 bound volumes of publications, edited by Cantor, from the "Research Institute of America", a New York based organization devoted to economic affairs

Collection includes documents granting Dlotovskiĭ promotions and decorations, some signed by Nicholas I, Alexander II, and Alexander II's Minister of War, Dmitriĭ A. Mili︠u︡tin. Also included are a history of the Cuirassier regiment by Dlotovskiĭ, and a memorandum he wrote on the possibility of setting up a Staff for Irregular Troops.

Personal, administrative, political, and investigative files of Nickerson. The papers deal almost entirely with his eight years as County Executive, and consist of correspondence, memoranda, manuscripts of speeches, notes, press releases, photographs, and clippings. Among the major correspondents are James A. Farley, Hubert H. Humphrey, Robert F. Kennedy, Edward I. Koch, and Percy E. Sutton. The Investigation Files, which amount to nearly half the collection, document investigation into corruption and mismanagement in numerous Long Island businesses and governmental departments. These investigations, instigated and overseen by Nickerson, were carried out largely by the Commissioner of Accounts, Milton Lipson, and later by Samuel Greason, the first governmental ombudsman in the United States. These files consist primarily of memoranda, transcripts of hearings, payroll and financial accounts, notes, and tape recordings.

Shlippe's manuscripts include his memoirs (200 p.) and three brief manuscripts. The memoirs describe his work in the Moscow Zemstvo organization and in the Imperial Ministry of Agriculture. There are acounts of the political trends among zemstvo personnel, the reactions to the Stolypin reforms, the 1913 Congress of Zemstvo workers and the formation of the Vserossiĭskiĭ zemskiĭ soi︠u︡z. There are brief remarks on the Russo-Japanese War and the 1905 and February 1917 Revolutions. Other manuscripts include Shlippe's essay"Begstvo iz Moskvy v Rigu" (1947), an undated memo discussing the Russian Red Cross in Germany, 1921-1938, and a six-page memoir by Elizaveta P. Shlippe entitled "Neskolḱo stranit︠s︡ iz moeĭ zhizni.".

Notes and books from the library of Frances Elizabeth Henne, including some of her own books from her childhood, and others on children's literature inscribed to her by the authors; material for her class on illustration in children's literature, 1952-1979; and memorabilia. Also, a 3,000 card bibliography of children's books cited in book dealer catalogs as well as a small group of entries for monographs and serials with references to children's literature; printed ephemera collected by Phyllis Yuill Marquart (Columbia M.L.S., 1973) relating to her collecting of and research on Helen Bannerman's LITTLE BLACK SAMBO. Included are photocopies of Bannerman's out-of-print books, a folder on commercial spinoffs, such as Sambo's Restaurants, photocopies of various editions of STRUWELPETER, which contains the Sambo story and a 1971 BBC audio tape recording and transcript of a radio program on the topic.

There are notes from her lectures on Sociology at Adelphi College in 1911-1912; papers from 1912-1932, when Perkins served on the Commission for Safety and on the Industrial Commission of New York State; the main body of the material is from the period of her cabinet office, 1933-1945; and some items from her days on the Civil Service Commission, 1946-1953. Also included are personal and family papers.

They document the settlement and its antecedent institutions from 1854 to 1994, offering a unique view of the first wave of the settlement house movement in America, as well as related philanthropy and social welfare activities in New York City over a 140 year period. The origins of Goddard-Riverside Community Center are documented in Series I, which includes eight institutional subseries. These records provide a wealth of information on philanthropic, social welfare and settlement work from the mid-19th century through the 1950s. Series II - IV document the activities of the settlement from 1959 to the 1990s, with a particular emphasis on the urban renewal period of the 1960s. Items in Series VII include photographs of staff, activities, facilities of Goddard-Riverside Community Center, as well as several of its predecessor institutions.

This archive consists of manuscripts, business files, production materials, and correspondence from 1966 -2012. The journal Hanging Loose was first published in 1966 was preceded by the journal Things, begun by two Columbia College students Emmet Jarrett and Ron Schreiber, Hanging Loose Press founders. The most recent issue #101 was published in 2013. The press has also published books, mostly poetry. The selection process is collective and inclusive. Hanging Loose publishes high school students and has dedicated issues to literature written by prison inmates. HL published Hettie Jones, long-time Columbia-affiliated poet Paul Violi, Jack Agueros, Sherman Alexie, and Charles North, as well as many of the collective members. Denise Levertov is a former board member.

The collection contains correspondence with the authors, including contracts signed with authors as well as negotiations with the authors over various aspects of publishing their works; financial records documenting many aspects of the operation of Harper & Brothers, including royalties paid to authors, records of stock offerings and company reorganizations, and general ledgers which contain daily notes on all aspects of the operation of the business; book catalogues and trade lists; research materials collected by Eugene Exman for his history of Harper & Brothers; visual materials, from drawings and photographs of Harper's authors to colophon designs and an oil painting of the original Harper's building.

There are extensive drafts and source materials for her unpublished autobiography. The office files of the American Institute of Pacific Relations and the international Institute of Pacific Relations, containing correspondence and reports concerned with international conferences, research programs, and publications programs of both Institutes, and relating to the political, economic, and social problems in eastern and southern Asia and the South Pacific, as well as with problems of American foreign policy. There are many travel letters and on-the-spot reports relating to conditions in China, Japan, Russia, Australia, the Philippines, India, and Pakistan during the period 1933 to 1954.

James Yen and the IIRR concerned with the development, sharing, and financing innovative methods of teaching, improving agriculture, health and family planning, and education in impoverished villages. The collection includes Pli︠u︡shchevskiĭ-Pli︠u︡shchik's diaries for 1905-1909 (covering the Russo-Japanese War, and the 1905 Revolution) and 1914-1920 (covering World War I, the 1917 Russian Revolution and the Civil War). Among other manuscripts are a memorandum prepared by General Denikin's staff for the allied missions upon their arrival in Ekaterinodar (Nov. 1918) and Pli︠u︡shchevskiĭ-Pli︠u︡shchik's obituary of General Ivan Romanovskiĭ. There is also a photograph of Pli︠u︡shchevskiĭ-Pli︠u︡schik and Romanovskiĭ at Imperial Staff Headquarters in Mogilev in 1917.
