Colford wrote the "Ink" column for New York Newsday until 2000 and then joined the Daily News and launched the twice-weekly "Hot Copy" column, which focused mainly on NYC's publishing industries — newspapers, magazines and books.

He collected numerous honors, including the Milton Caniff Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Cartoonists Society, the New York Newspaper Guild's Page One Journalism Award (twenty times), and the National Cartoonists Society's Sports Cartoon Award (ten times). He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame for both his cartooning, and his sports writing.
