Content Description

Robert A. Signer was a journalist and historian who specialized in researching the history of the New York Evening World. At City College, in the early 1960s, Signer was editor-in-chief of the Ticker and a copy boy at the New York Post. Later, he was the city editor of the Chicago Daily News at the time of its closing and worked as an editor at the Washington Post.

After he retired, Signer embarked on a monograph of the New York World in the three years from 1928 to its closing in 1931, during which time Walter Lippmann was the paper's editor and led it to a strategy of leading and challenging public opinion through long-format reporting. He worked on the manuscript for nearly 10 years, up until his death, at 80, in 2022.
