(Originally, co-chaired by I. I. Rabi, Higgins Professor of Physics, and Philip C. Jessup, Hamilton Fish Professor of International Law and Diplomacy, Council for Atomic Age Studies (CAAS) was composed of representatives from the fields of Physics, Engineering, Medicine, International Relations, Journalism, Business, Philosophy, and Law. Believed to be the first of its kind in the country, this group of educators studied, in an interdisciplinary way, the problems created by the development of atomic energy. In 1961, the CAAS received a Carnegie Endowment for Internal Peace grant to survey present and propose studies dealing with the effects of science and technology on world affairs. The CAAS was absorbed into the Institute for Studies in Science and Human Affairs in 1966.)

Nicholas Murray Butler speeches, 1882-1947

This collection contains copies of Butler's speeches delivered at Columbia University as well as at numerous other institutions from 1882 to 1947 during his tenure as president of the Industrial Education Association as well as Columbia University. While the speeches address a number of topics, they primarily focus on the state of America's higher educational system, potential educational reforms, and local and international American politics (particularly in relation to the Republican Party and war).

Henry Hope Reed (1915-2013) was an American author, architecture critic and advocate of classical architecture. Along with writing and giving New York City walking tours, Reed served curator of Central Park and co-founder of Classical America. This collection contains his writings, correspondence, photographs and extensive research files on classical architecture and the people, parks, buildings, streets and history of New York City.

Herbert Wechsler Papers, 1919-2000, bulk 1932-1995

This collection contains the papers of lawyer and legal scholar Herbert Wechsler. The various documentation includes Wechsler's work with the United States Department of Justice (including documents from the Nuremberg and International Military Tribunals), The American Law Institute (including the work of the Model Penal Code), Columbia University, and several other organizations to which Wechsler contributed or with which he was affiliated. The collection also contains papers related to Wechsler's legal work, including documents pertaining to his work on New York Times Co. v. Sullivan. Wechsler's scholarly work is also collected here including drafts of articles, books, speeches, and special lectures such as his Oliver Wendell Holmes Lecture, "Toward Neutral Principles of Constitutional Law". The Herbert Wechsler papers also cover various points of interaction Wechsler had with other figures in his field including Francis Biddle, Telford Taylor, and Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter. The genre of documentation is primarily correspondence, reports, and writings with annotations. The collection also contains some ephemera and photographic materials and one audiocassette.

Series X: Correspondence(13 boxes, 6.5 linear feet). The series of Wechsler's correspondence contains both personal and professional exchanges with a variety of people and organizations. Of particular note is Wechsler's lengthy correspondence with Francis Biddle, Justice Felix Frankfurter, academic criminologist Sir Leon Radzincowitz, and President Richard Nixon (regarding advice on the amendment to reduce the voting age to 18).

Marie Mattingly Meloney Collection on Marie Curie, circa 1890-1962, bulk circa 1920-1934

The bulk of the collection deals with Marie Curie's travels in the United States in 1921 and 1929, as a result of Marie Mattingly Meloney's fundraising campaigns to purchase radium for Curie's experiments. It includes correspondence with, photographs of, and manuscripts and printed material by and about Marie Curie. There is also an academic cap worn by Marie Curie while accepting honorary degrees in the United States, and a watch given to Meloney by Curie.

The Writings Series consists of material from many of Polanyi's major postwar works, including The Great Transformation, Dahomey and the Slave Trade,Trade and Markets in Early Empires, the posthumously published The Livelihood of Man, and the unpublished Freedom and Technology. Also included are the manuscripts of various essays, lectures, and other writings. The writings included herein contain drafts at various stages of completion, including simple outlines or synopses (The Great Transformation), multiple intermediate drafts and incomplete manuscripts, as well as the final and near-final drafts (Dahomey). The works placed under the heading "Non-Market Economies Writings are independent studies and essays that also reflect Polanyi's work in Trade and Markets in Early Empires. Much of Polanyi's research and scholarship was collaborative. Because of this collaborative relationship, the correspondence and notes of Rosemary Arnold on Dahomey, are included with the writings.
