900 itemsThe collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, a subject file, and printed materials. There are letters both to Merzheevskiĭ and to other persons. Most of the manuscripts were submitted for publication in "Vladimirskiĭ Vestnik," which published chiefly religious and monarchist materials. There is a book of memoranda of the regional chapter of the society of veterans of Gallipoli in Belgium and the group of the First Army Corps in Belgium and Luxembourg. The subject file is on General Miller and contains photographs of Miller and General Kutepov. Printed materials include approximately 80 copies of "Vladimirskiĭ Vestnik" dated 1955-1968.

The papers cover the entire field of law with particular emphasis on civil rights, labor law, and family law. They include several series of office files dealing with Columbia University Law faculty, students, his course materials, and the administration of the Law School. In addition, there are numerous files for Amherst College (from which Gellhorn received his A.B. degree), arbitration cases, federal administrative procedure, legislation, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Association of American Law Schools, and Fordham University (for which he prepared a study). There are manuscripts, drafts, proofs, correspondence, and other related materials for some of his books: Administrative Law Cases and Comments (1940); Security, Loyalty and Science (1950); The States and Subversion (1952); Individual Freedom and Government Restraint (1956); When Americans Complain (1966); and Ombudsmen and others (1966).

The Foundation's correspondence files consist of letters from different organizations and foundations, including the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Social Change, The NAACP, the United Negro College Fund, the Studio Museum in Harlem, and the YWCA. Also included in this collection are community dialogues on race relations (1974-1975); proposed dialogues (1979) on such subjects as the Boy Scouts of America, Columbia University, and the National Council of Christians and Jews; and files on the Whitney M. Young Fellows Retreat Conferences (1980-1984). The collection contains many files on Ed Wilson's bust of Young (1991), including contracts and agreements, records of payments to Wilson, documents concerning the bust's placement in various locations, correspondence with Wilson (1983-1991), and miscellaneous photographs and pictures. The contributions files contain annual listings of contributions and records of contributions from the National Urban League, assorted organizations, corporations, individuals, foundations, and Philip Morris.

Half of the collection relates to McGill's research and writing in the fields of experimental and mathematical psychology, particularly in the psychology of perception, and contains drafts of papers, notes, class materials and works by others. Also included are files relating to McGill's chairmanship of the Carnegie Commission on the Future of Public Broadcasting, files pertaining to his participation on the New York State Special Advisory Panel on Medical Malpractice, and some papers from his chairmanship of the psychology department, and later chancellorship, of the University of California, San Diego. Some personal correspondence and documents are also included. Among the cataloged correspondence are John W. Gardiner, Edward M. Kennedy, Margaret Mead, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Jonas Salk, and Beverly Sills
