Correspondence, manuscripts, notes, research materials, microfilms, printed materials and books. Included among the correspondents are Eleanor Roosevelt, Henry A. Wallace, Norman Thomas, Wayne Morse, Reinhold Niebuhr and Franklin H. Giddings. Also included are the manuscript notes and research materials for Lehmann's book John Millar of Glasgow, 1735-1801 (1960); early drafts, notes and research materials for Henry Home, Lord Kames, and the Scottish Enlightenment (1971); and numerous papers and articles, many unpublished, dealing with the Scottish Enlightenment. The collection also includes some information relating to Lehmann's involvement in local and national politics, especially his participation in the Liberal Party and Americans for Democratic Action. A number of Lehmann's Scottish books, as well as his own writings are shelved at the end of the collection.

This collection includes correspondence with a number of people, including Horatio Hale, William H. Samson, William Kirby, George S. Conover, and others, and pertains to research, publication, and other enterprises regarding prominent individuals such as Red Jacket and Joseph Brant, and the Cherry Valley Massacre. Correspondence includes linguistic, genealogical, and historical information, including sensitive content.

The collection comprises two large scrapbooks on Columbia University. There is also material relating to the Iteco Company and the life of William Daniel Clark.

Correspondence of Brown with other contemporary writers including Bernard Citroën, Malcolm Cowley, William Eastlake, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Allen Ginsberg, Jean Malaquais, Charles Olson, Gary Snyder, Philip Whalen, Jonathan Williams, and William Carlos Williams. Much of the correspondence is informal and deals with the writing and publishing of Brown's novel THE WAY TO THE UNCLE SAM HOTEL, and with other literary interests.

Letters of a personal nature, manuscripts including a short story"The Critical Book Store" seven numbers from the "Editor's Easy Chair" a series written by Howells for "Harper's Monthly" from 1900 to 1920 which included book reviews and essays on poetry, capital punishment, Mark Twain, and the political campaign of 1912. Also included is a biographical sketch of George William Curtis from "Roundabout to Boston" in the form in which it was printed in "Literary Friends and Acquaintances" in 1900.

Lecture notes from courses Professor Diver taught at Columbia from 1955 to 1989; Manuscripts of unpublished invited lectures at various universities here and abroad and related notes and linguistic data; official correspondence of the well-known linguistics journal WORD, from the period when Professor Diver was editor of this journal (1956-1965); Professor Diver's notebooks of courses he took while a graduate student at Columbia.
