Abstract

Thomas Chalmers Murray was a graduate of the Union Theological Seminary class of 1872, an historian of Hebrew scripture, and the author of Lectures on the Origin and Growth of the Psalms (published posthumously in 1880). The collection consists of notes taken while attending Union Theological Seminary.

Processing Information

Material was cataloged by Lynn A. Grove on 1988-07-12. Metal clips were removed from materials and folded items were flattened. Materials were placed in new acid-free folders and boxes. Acidic items were separated from one another by interleaving with acid-free paper as needed. The finding aid was created by Rebecca Nieto in 2017 with the support of the Henry Luce Foundation and the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation, and edited by Leah Edelman in 2021.

History / Biographical Note

Biographical / Historical

Thomas Chalmers Murray attended Union Theological Seminary between 1869 and 1872, during which time he studied Hebrew, Biblical exegesis, and church history under formative Union professors including Henry Boynton Smith, Roswell Dwight Hitchcock, and others. He was an extensive note-taker over the course of his studies. He published his writings as Lectures on the Origin and Growth of the Psalms (1880), a series of lectures centered on the psalter and the history and literature of the Hebrew scriptures.
