This collection contains publications focusing on the Belgian Congo and Africa as well as two social science publications; Markowitz's writings on the Belgian Congo, including drafts and the final publication of a book review submitted to Africa Today; general writings on psychology and Markowitz's correspondence with several academic institutions; teaching materials; and psychological reports written by Markowitz.

    This series contains publications focusing on the Belgian Congo and Africa that Markowitz received through airmail from Belgium, some of which have annotations in the corresponding envelopes. This series also contains two social science publications.

History / Biographical Note

Biographical / Historical

Dr. Marvin David Markowitz was born on February 2, 1937. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Henrietta College and received a Ph.D in Political Science from Columbia University in 1968. From 1963-1965, he was a Research Fellow for the Social Science Research Council. In this position he carried out field research in Belgium and the Congo and collaborated with Professor Benoit Verhaegen at the Université Lovanium de Léopoldville (now the Université Lovanium de Kinshasa). Dr. Markowitz also served in the faculty at the City College of the City University of New York and as an Assistant Professor at New York University where he obtained postdoctoral training in psychoanalysis. In addition to his interests in social science and psychoanalysis, Dr. Markowitz has written several articles in publications such as Africa, Africa Today and The Journal of Politics. Dr. Markowitz worked as a psychoanalyst and was a member of the Contemporary Freudian Society and the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis. He is owner of the Oakwood Center along with his wife, Roberta Markowitz, LCSW.
