Biographical / Historical
Heezen was born in Vinton, Iowa. He received his B.A. from the University of Iowa in 1947 and his M.A. in 1952 and a Ph.D in 1957 from Columbia University. Heezen served as a professor of Geology since 1964 and counducted research at the Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory. A pioneer in mapping the ocean floor, he was awarded the American Geophysical Union's prestigious Walter H. Bucher Medal for his life's work in 1977. Three weeks later, Heezen died of a heart attack while on a research cruise to study the Mid-Atlantic Ridge near Iceland.
