Description

Summary

This very small collection contains the pages of a scrapbook compiled by Professor George Marcus Allen when he was Chair of the Committee on Public Ceremonies at Columbia University in the City of New York, July 1, 1945 to June 30, 1948. The scrapbook contains correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, programs and related printed matter all connected to the ceremonial events he was in charge of organizing. Among the events documented are commencements and convocations of the time period, Maria Moors Cabot Prize ceremonies, the ceremony honoring Columbia University for its work with Atomic Bomb Research (4 Oct 1945), special convocations awarding honorary degrees to Juan Antonio Rio, President of the Republic of Chile (18 Oct 1945), Winston Churchill (18 March 1946), The Archbishop of Canterbury (16 September 1946), and eleven wartime leaders from the U.S. Armed Forces (21 February 1947). In addition to the scrapbook, a self-published book of Allen family genealogy as compiled by Jane M. Allen was also dontated and is included with this collection.
