History / Biographical Note
Zoology was first taught at Columbia in October 1892 as part of the Department of Biology. In 1896 the name was changed to the Department of Zoology. Departmental faculty has included Thomas Hunt Morgan, Edmund Beecher Wilson, and Theodosius Dobzhansky. In 1966 Zoology and Botany merged into the Department of Biological Sciences.
James Howard McGregor joined the Department of Zoology as a Fellow in 1897. He earned an AM in 1896 and PhD in 1899. Columbia College's "Mr. Chips" was a member of the department for over 60 years. (Instructor, Adjunct Professor, Associate Professor 1914-1924, Professor 1924-1942; Professor Emeritus 1942-1954).
