Historical Note

The Albert Kahn Foundation for the Foreign Travel of American Teachers was established in 1911 by Albert Kahn of Paris. The fellowship recipients had to spend a year in travel, familiarizing himself with different peoples, countries and civilizations, and at the conclusion of his travels, make a formal report to the trustees of the Albert Kahn Foundation. However, conditions of travel during and immediately following the World War I precluded appointments from 1915 to 1925. The Board of Trustees, which gave this award, included President Nicholas Murray Butler of Columbia University. William E. Weld, professor of Economics, received the fellowship in 1927.
