Series I: Event records

This series consists of the records created in organizing events at Columbia since the 1920s. The personnel in charge of ceremonies and the reporting structure has changed a number of times since the early days of the Committee on Public Ceremonies. There are five sets of records from the different eras or administrations and there are overlaps in the dates.

Committee on Public Ceremonies

The earliest set of records dates from to 1921 to around 1951. Please note that there is some overlap in the dates with the next set of records. Records are organized alphabetically by the name of the event and can include programs, invitations, tickets, instructions for marshals, guest lists, seating diagrams, rain day arrangements, press releases, newspaper clippings, memos, thank-you cards and general correspondence.

Public Ceremonies office records (Office of the General Secretary)

This second set of ceremonies records date from 1929 to 1957. The bulk of the records are from 1948 to 1952, or the Eisenhower administration. The coordination of events moved briefly from the Office of the Secretary to the Office of the General Secretary (later Vice President for Development) with the arrival of new University President Dwight D. Eisenhower. There are very detailed and thorough records for Commencement in 1948 and 1949 and the Installation of Eisenhower in 1948. Records are organized alphabetically by the name of the event and can include programs, invitations, tickets, instructions for marshals, guest lists, seating diagrams, rain day arrangements, press releases, newspaper clippings, memos, thank-you cards and general correspondence.
