Department of English and Comparative Literature records

Graduate student cards, circa 1912-1967

Restricted materials. To request pemisson to access a student information card, please contact the University Archives (uarchives@columbia.edu).

The student cards are for graduate students who attended Columbia roughly from 1912/13 to 1966/67. The department continued to update the cards (noting new addresses and dates of death) through the 1970s. We have a mostly full alpha run: only missing G-Huang and there are no "Ke" last names. The cards contain home and local addresses, previous degrees, and (some) registrar photos in the front. In the back, the cards include the academic years and the department classes taken (identified only by course number).

Master's Essays, 1967-1993

Indexes

The by-author and the by-subject sets of cards serve as a catalogue or guide to finding the microfilm with a particular student's MA Essay. The essays in the microfilm are organized mostly by year (all the essays in a roll are from the same year or consecutive years) but not alphabetically by the student's last name. MA essays up to 1971 can be found in the Columbia University library catalog, CLIO.
