V: Typographical Patents, 1881-1905The series consists of 224 patents for type designs. The material is dated mainly in the 1880s but extends into the 20th century. 33 different designers are represented. The most important of these, on the basis of numerical representation, are as follows: Herman Ihlenburg with 53 patents, John K. Rogers with 22 patents, William SV. Jackson with 21 patents, William F. Capitain with 18 patents, Henry H. Thorp with 15 patents, Charles H. Beeler with 13 patents, and James M. Conner with 11 patents. Many other eminent designers, including Frederick W. Goudy, T.M.C1eland, and Will Bradley, are represented by single or by small groups of patents. Many of the patents are accompanied by "assignments of rights" to the newly-formed American Type Founders Co. With a number of these are small groups of correspondence relating to the designs and arrangements for obtaining patent-protection for them. There is at least one case of an "interference" in a patent filing (Joseph W. Phinney's Vertical Writing Script Type, 1898,Pat. No. 28254) with letters and documents which cover this disagreement and its resolution. |
