Series I: Research Files for The Publisher, circa 1910-2009

The vast majority of this collection is arranged alphabetically under Series I: Research Files for The Publisher and pertains to Brinkley's biography of Henry Luce, The Publisher: Henry Luce and His American Century (Knopf, 2010). This series contains some of Brinkley's correspondence and research notes, but is mainly composed of subject files containing photocopies of archival material that Brinkley consulted.

Henry R. Luce (1898-1967) was an American publisher whose media empire included Time, Fortune, and Life magazines. Considered to be one of the most powerful figures in American journalism, Luce is credited with inventing the modern weekly newsmagazine. He held the title of editor in chief of all Time Inc. publications from 1929 until 1964, when he became editorial chairman. A longtime supporter of the Republican Party, Luce was an influential figure in national politics in the mid-twentieth century.

Subseries I.2: Subject Files contains Brinkley's research materials, organized primarily according to his original arrangement, with folders usually labeled by subject or source and year. The research material are primarily photocopies of archival sources (especially the Henry R. Luce papers and Time Inc. records at the New-York Historical Society, the Clare Booth Luce papers at the Library of Congress and the John Shaw Billings papers at the University of South Carolina), but also include some original copies of Time Inc. publications and scattered research notes.
