Series I: Vocal and directorial career, 1912-1995, undated, bulk 1912-1962

This series primarily comprises material relating to Rosing's career as a recitalist, including programs for his concerts and clippings of reviews from the English, French, and Russian press. This series also contains some material relating to his later work as a producer and director, including publicity photographs, programs, and press clippings. His correspondence with collaborators can be found in this series. Please note that some of Rosing's directorial notes and outlines can be found interspersed in the notebooks in series II.

Box 1 Folder 2 Concert, operatic, and theatrical programs from Rosing's vocal and directorial career, 1915, 1928, 1936, 1950, 1957

Includes a program for the premiere of Albert Coates's Pickwick by The British Music Drama Opera Company at the Royal Opera House (1936 November 18th to December 8th) for which Rosing served as artistic director alongside the composer; a stapled program of Rosing's "All Russian" recital at the Aeolian Hall, 1928 June 8th and 12th; a hard-cover, cloth-bound program for the Serbian Relief Fund's "Historic Slav Concert in Aid of the Starving and Homeless Serbian Women and Children" at the Queen's Hall, in which Rosing participated as a singer, 1915 December 15; stapled program for "The California Story: A Magnificent Pageant-Spectacle" at the Hollywood Bowl, staged and directed by Rosing, 1950 September 8-12; a printed poster of press clippings for the Fall 1957 season of New York City Opera, featuring a press clipping from the New York Times about Rosing's staging of Puccini's Turandot, 1957 October 10; a broadsheet program for "The California Story: A Magnificent Pageant-Spectacle" at the Hollywood Bowl, staged and directed by Rosing, 1950 September 8-12. This material was originally held in a folder titled "Vladimir Rosing Concert Programs + Production Programs."


Box 1 Folder 3 Publicity photographs of Rosing and his productions; correspondence with collaborators, 1927, 1953-1954, 1957-1958, 1962

Photographs include: set designs by Nicolai Benois and production stills for Rosing's staging of Borodin's Prince Igor at Chicago Lyric Opera, 1962; three photographs of Rosing himself, 1927, 1954 and late 1950s; a production still from The California Story, directed by Rosing 1957-1958. Correspondence includes a postcard from Boris Chaliapin (son of Russian bass, Feodor Chaliapin) postmarked 1953; two letters from Nicolai Benois on Teatro alla Scala letterhead from April 1962 (in Russian). This material was originally held in a folder titled "Vladimir Rosing: Letters + Photos."

From the French, German, Russian, and British press. Binding is deteriorating and some pages are coming loose. Press clippings are glued onto the pages. There are some loose clippings.

Includes two large newspaper clippings: "Rosing Triumphs as Usual," Musical Courier, 1924 January 17, page 13; "Rosing, Remarkable Russian," Musical Courier, 1922 January 4, page 35. Includes a wordprocessed letter from 237 Studio in Denver about an E-Bay auction (possibly of the two clippings). Also includes tearsheet of "Val Rosing's Technique of Acting for Singers" by Ruth Glean Rosing, New York Opera Newsletter 1995 May; atypewritten eulogy for Rosing by Meredith Willson, 1963 November 27; a wordprocessed transcript of an interview with Rosing, 1924 March 3; a wordprocessed transcript of reviews of Rosing's London debut at the Royal Albert Hall, 1913 May 25; tearsheets of "Advance Guard: The American Opera Company, Forty Years On, Spruced Up the Warhorses" in Opera News, 1971 February 27; a printout of a chapter "Rosing the Russian" from Eighth Notes: Voices and Figures of Music and the Dance by H.T. Parker (New York: Dodd, Mead and Company, 1922). Some material was originally held in a folder titled "Vladimir Rosing: Articles."
