Subseries X.1. Georgii Gorchakov Collection

Contains approximately 130 items such as correspondence, notes and documents of Georgii Popa-Gorchakov (1902-1995), who had been Sergei Prokofiev's assistant in Paris. The materials are dated from the 1930s to the 1980s.

Subseries X.2 Christopher Palmer Collection

Contains approximately 35 items including correspondence, notes and documents of Christopher Francis Palmer (1946-1995), the English composer, arranger and orchestrator who had planned to write a biography of Sergei Prokofiev. The materials are dated from the 1980s and 1990s.



Box 88 Folder 1 Letter to Christopher Palmer, 8/1/1988, 4 pages

The first page is a letter, signed "Jenny." Attached is a copy of a transcript of a broadcast, which originally aired on April 4th, 1980. The broadcast included a reading of Eugene Onegin (in an English translation by Sir Charles Johnston, adapted by Ian Cotterell and Clive Bennett) with Prokofiev's music. The broadcast featured the BBC Northern singers (chorus master, Stephen Wilkinson), the BBC Northern Symphony Orchestra (leader, Dennis Simmons) conducted by Edward Downes. The reading featured Richard Johnson as the narrator, Susan Fleetwood as Tatiana, TIm Piggott-Smith as Onegin and Philip Sully as Lensky. A tape of this broadcast appears to have originally accompanied the letter and the transcript.
