East Side House records, 1851-1992
18 linear feetThe records include addresses, annual reports, correspondence, memos, minutes, program files, newsclippings, administrative records, photographs, video tape, and film. They include material dating from the decades prior to the establishment of the settlement which shed light on the philosophy and motivation of its founders, and offer a unique view of the first wave of the settlement house movement in America. The records document social conditions, demographic change, political activity and philanthropy in New York City. Addresses by East Side House founder Everett P. Wheeler, included in Series I, document his family history and career as a lawyer and civic reformer prior to the founding of East Side House. Wheeler's correspondence details his role in establishing the settlement and managing it during its first decades.

Among these are designs for the Van Schaick Free Reading Room (now the Huntington Free Library and Reading Room), Bronx, N.Y.; reredos proposed for the Church of the Transfiguration, New York City; Chapel of the Good Shepherd on Blackwells Island (now Roosevelt Island), N.Y.; a competition design for the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, New York City; St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Hanover, N.H.); and drawings by others, including Sullivan Jones and Rowland Plumbe. This collection also includes manuscript copies of three letters from Withers to his mother written at sea in 1852 and describing his trip to America.

Papers of Jordan Lawrence Mott include 51 deeds, letters, and leases showing Mott's subdivision, improvement, and letting of this property. Correspondence of J.L. Mott II is mostly from well-known people in English society in the early 20th century. Mott's wife, Katherine Jerome Purdy Mott, was a cousin of the Jerome sisters (Lady Randolph Churchill, Lady Leslie, and Mrs. Moreton Frewen). Papers of J.L. Mott III include correspondence with publishers about his works, miscellaneous manuscripts, and financial documents. Correspondents include the Duchess of Abercorn, Prince Arthur (Duke of Connaught) and his family, L.B.R. Briggs, Ednah Dow Cheney, Joseph B. Gilder, H.A. Harvey, Lady Constance Leslie, Frank E.
