Family letters to Nicholson from his father, James Nicholson, and from his sisters Hannah Nicholson Gallatin, second wife of the Secretary of the Treasury and diplomat Albert Gallatin, Catherine Nicholson Few, wife of Senator William Few from Georgia and signer of the Constitution, and Jehoiadden Nicholson Chrystie, wife of James Chrystie of New York.

This collection includes letters from members of the academic community at Columbia and elsewhere, former students, Columbia College alumni, members of the Van Amringe family, and friends. These letters deal with the official, alumni, and personal matters. There are two letter books for 1894 when he was Dean of Columbia's School of Arts (later known as Columbia College, the undergraduate school). The manuscripts include holograph and typescript copies of speeches made by Van Amringe at various Columbia functions, at alumni affairs, and at meetings of civic, charitable, and academic organizations; course notebooks while he attended Columbia College; diaries of daily appointments, 1909-1914; intimate prose and poetry written by Van Amringe and members of his family; a pencil sketchbook and notebook containing three plays by his daughter Emily Bulow Van Amringe. The collection includes numerous clippings, brochures, invitations, and other Columbia and personal memorabilia.

Correspondence and papers of various members of the Kane and Hand families. The collection includes the business correspondence of Oliver Kane of Albany (early 19th century); the correspondence of Moses Hand (1764-1826) of Baltimore; the letters and papers of Thomas Jennings Hand (1824-1908) of New York, with many letters from Professor William Hand Browne of John Hopkins; the diaries and account books of Thomas Jennings Hand, extending from 1859 to 1901, and the household account books of his wife; the family correspondence, accounts, and personal papers of Oliver Kane-Hand (1863-1941); various legal documents and papers of Oliver Kane-Hand (1863-1941); various legal documents and papers of Oliver Kane King, Thomas Jennings Hand, Jr. and Oliver Kane-Hand; and a group of family photographs.

About half of the collection is material related to Harriet Korn Lehman. This small amount of material relates to her time at the Lincoln School, an experimental school founded in the early 20th century by Progressive education theorists at Columbia University's Teacher's College. These include her graduation excercises as she finished Elementary school, as well as a collection of writings by Lincoln School elementary students. Also with the material in the year book is a high school literary journal, and the high school year book from the 1926 Lincoln School class. Also included in the collection is a scrap book and a common-place book from the 1870s belonging to Isidore S. Korn, presumably the father of Harriet Korn Lehman. The scrap book consists mostly of cartoons, poems, and advice columns (such as he daily or weekly written by Henry Ward Beecher) clipped from newspapers and pasted into an old account book. The Common Place book is a collection of noteworthy quotes or selections from plays, poems, novels, and non-fiction works, hand-copied by the young Isidore. At the end of the common place book are two award winning essays Isidore wrote during his years at Columbia, one on the origins of the Roman Republic and another on the Philosophy of History.

Letters, mainly of a personal nature, written by and to various members of the Leverich family. The correspondence centers around Charles P. Leverich and his wife Matilda.

Letters, documents, and business papers of various members of the Ludlow family, including documents relating to the estate of John Crooke, in account with Gabriel W. Ludlow, 1774-1795; letters and documents relating to the estate of Philip Livingston, including material on the Schoharie lands and letters to Charles Ludlow, executor, 1811-1814; Charles Ludlow papers including family and business letters, 1790-1809, miscellaneous business papers, 1773-1815; miscellaneous business receipts, 1785-1829, and checkbook and checks; documents relating to the estate of William Ludlow, 1785-1793; and documents relating to the estate of David Van Horne, in account with Charles Ludlow, 1765-1811.

This collection is a random group of papers of three generations of the Mott family. Papers of Jordan Lawrence Mott include 51 deeds, letters, and leases showing Mott's subdivision, improvement, and letting of this property. Correspondence of J.L. Mott II is mostly from well-known people in English society in the early 20th century. Mott's wife, Katherine Jerome Purdy Mott, was a cousin of the Jerome sisters (Lady Randolph Churchill, Lady Leslie, and Mrs. Moreton Frewen). Papers of J.L. Mott III include correspondence with publishers about his works, miscellaneous manuscripts, and financial documents. Correspondents include the Duchess of Abercorn, Prince Arthur (Duke of Connaught) and his family, L.B.R. Briggs, Ednah Dow Cheney, Joseph B. Gilder, H.A. Harvey, Lady Constance Leslie, Frank E. Schoonover, Christian Schussele, and Caspar Whitney.

Correspondence, art work, and memorabilia of Rood, including letters to Rood from colleagues, scientists, and artists including Albert Bierstadt, Arthur J. Evans, Joseph Henry, and Charles Eliot Norton. Family letters to and from his wife, Matilda, and children; letters from his wife to her mother, Anna Prunner, in Germany; sketchbooks, drawings, and etchings of Rood and his son, Roland Rood; and photographs and memorabilia.

Correspondence, manuscripts, notes, course materials, illustrations, family items, and printed materials of Sherwin. The manuscripts are largely of unpublished material, but are of some published works like THE ENCOMPASSING MIRROR. The majority of the collection consists of Sherwin's notes on various literary and historical topics including among others Dryden, Pope, and Swift. Course materials are from his classes at City College. The illustrations are some of those considered for use in his publications. Family items include college papers by his son James, notebooks kept by his wife, Stella, during a period of mental illness, and Sherwin's reflections upon her condition. The printed materials consist of periodical articles and reviews by Sherwin and reviews of his books.
