Sultan was heavily involved in organzing the New York Musicians Organization jazz festivals in the early 1970s. This subseries includes extensive documentation of the planning and execution of the festivals, including correspondence, contracts, publicity, schedules, and other documents.

This subseries contains a variety of flyers, pamphlets, publications that Sultan gathered in the 1970s in the course of his work as a musician and community organizer in New York. It includes a some rare and ephemeral ican-American periodicals, a wide range of jazz and Black flyers and pamphlets, and other materials.

Subseries VI.1 contains letters from and printed ephemera related to individuals who appeared as guests on Radio Unnameable or were otherwise significant figures in the counterculture movements with which Bob Fass was associated. Many, including Richard Elman, Abbie Hoffman, and Paul Krassner, were also Fass's personal friends. (Manuscripts by Elman, Krassner, and Gerd Stern, among others, are located in Subseries VI.3.) There are also slides and a small number of photographs documenting protests against the Vietnam War, the 1968 Chicago Democratic National Convention, and nuclear armaments, as well as musical performances including the Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals. Finally, the subseries contains subject files containing mostly printed ephemera related to Fass's political and artistic affiliations and interests. These include the Youth International Party (Yippies), various political assassination and conspiracy theories, Manhattan tenant and squatter organizing efforts, and the Greenwich Village folk music scene.

This subseries contains popular Japanese music songbooks that cover the following areas: national anthems, theme songs, collections of popular songs, school songs and dormitory songs, a Girl Scout songbook, jazz music, shamisen music songs, songs from an annual singing contest held on New Year's Eve, folk songs, military songs, parodies, ballads, bawdy songs, youthful songs, and enka (traditional-style Japanese popular ballads).

Subseries 1.25, Other and multiple works, 1996-2018, undated, includes materials related to other works by Shange (for which there were not enough items to constitute a subseries). This subseries also contains groupings of materials in which multiple works were originally arranged together (for example, photocopies of multiple excerpts or poems grouped and edited for performance or anthologies). Types of materials include photocopies of published works (some with notes), typewritten and handwritten manuscripts and proofs with notes and edits (from Shange, editors, and others), recordings of and notes for performances, dance notation and choreography, and interviews.
