Series comprises primarily correspondence, photographs, and other research documents related to Hu Shih (胡適) as well as his family and friends, dating from 1938 to 2016. The correspondence are primarily between Hu Shih, Hu Shih's family and friends, and T.C. Hsu, dating from 1949 to 1961. Most of the photographs in the series depict Hu Shih's social life and family life and events in New York and Taiwan, dating from circa 1921 to 1960s. Also include in the photographs are portraits of Hu Shih and his wife, Chiang Tung-hsiu (江冬秀). The other documents in the series include researchers' writings on Hu Shih, the opening of the Hu Shih Memorial Hall and Hu Shih Park. Additional files are materials on Hu Shih's role in T.C. Hsu's education abroad, correspondence between the Hu family and T.C. Hsu, etc.

Series II contains the spectrum of materials related to de Bary's decades-long career, primarily at Columbia University. Organized alphabetically, Sub-Series II.1 includes all general files, notably those related to the establishment of the Committee on Oriental Studies, departmental affairs within, first, the Department of Chinese and Japanese and later, the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures (EALAC). Additional files shed light on de Bary's roles in various university committees and project groups. Sub-Series II.2 includes administrative files related to the Core Commission and the Core Curriculum. Note that the actual teaching contents of the Core Curriculum are gathered under Series VI: Teaching/Course Materials. Sub-Series II.3 includes general materials on the Heyman Center for the Humanities, which was established during de Bary's term as the Provost. Additional Heyman files may be have been interspersed in the neighboring Sub-Series.

China Institute was initially established in 1926 by the China Foundation for the Promotion of Education and Culture. Following China Institute's reorganization and incorporation in 1929, the China Foundation continued to participate in its budget and program. Series II, therefore, gathers budget and account statements, receipts and bills, and other funding and budget-related files. In particular, it includes the financial underflows of the Committee on Wartime Planning for Chinese Students in the United States between 1944 and 1947. Please refer to the subsequent Series III for additional files on wartime activities.

This series contains scrapbooks of photocopied articles, books, and manuscripts, many written by the individual film critics whose materials Makino collected. Some are autographed. There are also materials by critics for which there aren't specific files. Materials written by critic Satō Tadao/佐藤忠男, for example, can be found dispersed throughout the Makino Collection and many of his monographs can be found in the Columbia University Libraries online catalog. This series consists of 2 sets of color flash cards on children vocabulary dating from 1949 to circa 1956.
