A miscellaneous collection of World War II propaganda and memorabilia. Among the European items are samples of propaganda dropped from Allied aircraft, clippings, cartoons, and other printed ephemera in English, French, German, and Russian. For the war in the Pacific there is a complete set of Japanese language leaflets issued by the United States Army Forces, Pacific Area, Psychological Warfare Branch. These leaflets, including English translations, were used by General Douglas MacArthur's forces to induce the Japanese to surrender. In addition there is a collection of forty-eight German books removed from a German military field library and warehouse in France by American Army personnel. These works were revised during the 1930s to reflect the Nazi viewpoint. Also, a scrapbook of photographs and newspaper clippings on the laying of the cornerstone for a home for expectant mothers in Römhild (Thuringia) Germany, 1939.

Correspondence, manuscripts, photographs, memorabilia, and printed materials primarily concerning biochemistry. Correspondents include 24 Nobel Prize winners, including Otto Loewi, Otto Meyerhof, Archibald Vivian Hill, Feodor Lynes, Severo Ochoa, and Otto Warburg. Other correspondents include Sir Hans Krebs, John Farquhar Fulton, Jean Pierre Changeux, and others in Europe, Israel, Japan, and the USSR as well as the USA. Nachmansohn's concern with the place of Jews in science appears throughout the collection, especially in material concerning the Weismann Institute and other academic institutions to which he belonged. There are photographs of colleagues, many signed and inscribed during his many trips. The printed materials consist chiefly of Nachmanson's published works beginning with his 1927 doctoral dissertation (University of Berlin) and continuing throughout his professional life at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute (1926-1930), the Sorbonne (1933-1939), Yale University (1939-1942), and Columbia University (1942-1982).

These German World War II photographs are from the archives of the Reichsbahnzentrale für den Deutschen Reiseverkehr, Berlin. Most of the photographs have German and/or French captions. There are photographs from the Soviet Union, France, and North Africa; some also show German and other Axis generals and high officials. They appear to be press and publicity photographs.

The collection includes a letter by Krüger to Grayson Kirk describing his experiences, pages from a guest-book signed by American and Soviet soldiers, and photographs of Krüger and his restaurant.

Papers include personal and professional correspondence, documents, manuscripts, photographs, drawings, printed materials. Most of the collection consists of Al'tschuler's personal and professional papers and letters from colleagues, patients and friends. Materials of the collection deal with professional affairs, revolution and civil war in Crimea, Al'tschuller's sanatorium in Yalta, emigration to Constantinople, Germany, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, activity of such organizations as Russkii zagranichnyi istoricheskii arkhiv and Vserossiiskii zemskii soiuz.

Correspondence, manuscripts, reports, research files, audiotapes, and photographs documenting Backer's research and writing on General Clay and post war German affairs; his service in the military government, as a member of the Foreign Service, and as the supervisor of the U.S. Information Agency officer in numerous German cities. In researching his three books, Backer interviewed a number of public and military figures on audiotapes. There are several letters each from W. Averell Harriman, John Kenneth Galbraith, George Kennan, and John J. McCloy. The collection includes several boxes of photocopies of documents from various sources.

Correspondence, manuscripts, documents, photographs, printed material, and memorabilia. The cataloged correspondence is with Jacques Barzun, Benedetto Croce, Elena Croce, Wallace Fowlie, Thomas Mann, Salvatore Quasimodo, Arthur Schlesinger Jr., and René Wellek. There is manuscript material relating to the Bergel-Hauptman case and a number of Bergel's own essays and reviews. A copy of Bergel's German passport is included, as well as numerous family photographs and miscellaneous printed material. There is a cataloged photograph of Hugo von Hofmannsthal; and a gold Benedetto Croce centennial medal.
