Abstract:
The collection consists entirely of material related to the 1996 documentary written and directed by Joan Laskoff about the life and times of Hungarian-American journalist and newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer, Pulitzer and What He Prized. Photographic copies of images used in the film, many of which originally appeared in print publications during mid-19th to early 20th centuries, comprise most of the collection. Color slides of the images are also included. Record books, in which Laskoff indexes the images, make up the remainder of the collection.

Scope and content:

The Joan Laskoff Papers consists entirely of material collected by Joan Laskoff for the 1996 documentary Pulitzer and What He Prized. This record of the film, written and directed by Laskoff, is primarily in the form of photographic copies of images used, which depict the life and times of Hungarian-American publisher Joseph Pulitzer (1847-1911). Color slides of these images as well as indexes to the images are also included. The collection explores the professional, political, and personal life of Pulitzer, whose legacy includes the formation of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and the Pulitzer Prize. The collection offers insight into American journalism and the larger economic, political, and social environment during Pulitzer's time.

Biographical / historical:

Joan Laskoff (also known as Joan Kraft) is the writer and director of the 1996 documentary, Pulitzer and What He Prized. Laskoff also directed the documentaries The Unknown Eiffel (1974) and We Put Her There: The Contributors (2000).
