Abstract:
The White House Project was created in 1998, an offshoot of the Ms. Foundation, the organization worked to help put women in positions of leadership. The White House Project was created with the ideal that a woman should be President sooner rather than later, and worked to increase female presence in business and American governmental spaces. Known for their catchphrase "Vote, Run, Lead" the Project ran a non-partisan conference called Go Run which connected women to workshops and opportunities to learn how to run for office.

Scope and content:

The collection contains magazines, printed web articles and newspaper clippings creating a record of the media coverage of The White House Project. There is also correspondence to and from members of the project.

Within the collection there are a number of notebooks used to takes notes at important events, write down ideas, and make schedules.

There are Honorary Degrees, commencement flyers when Marie C. Wilson received her Honorary Degrees, and documents from past campaigns that the Project took part in.

Ephemera in the collection includes President Barbie dolls made in partnership with The White House project and items meant to promote the Project and its campaigns.

Digital material in the collection includes multiple CDs and recordings of speeches and events. There are VHS tapes and DV tapes of older recorded materials.

The bulk of this collection consists of photographs from events.

Biographical / historical:

Marie C. Wilson is the founder of the White House Project and co-creator of Take our Daughters and Sons to Work Day. Marie started her career in the late 70's in Des Moines, Iowa where she won a seat on the Des Moines City Council. She served for two years before leaving to run the Ms. Foundation for Women of which she is an honorary Founding Mother. She lead the foundation as president for 20 years before leaving to fully devote her time to The White House Project.

Winner of multiple awards, recipient of many honorary degrees, a former Athena Fellow at Barnard College, and member of the Women's Leadership Board at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School, Marie continues to speak about her work.
