Black Heights was a magazine created by Black students from Columbia and Barnard. Black Heights contained articles about Black art and culture, politics, and original poetry and prose. The magazine was funded by the Columbia College Office of Student Activities and the Barnard Undergraduate Association, and was published annually.
In its first issue, Clarence Waldron, Managing Editor, described the magazine as "a showcase of the finest literary and artistic talents nurtured on [the] Morningside Heights campus." However, the magazine's content was not exclusively related to art. Volume 6 from 1985 was titled "Apartheid... at Home?" and contained articles about union organizing efforts at Columbia, political commentary, and photographs from student activism on National Divestment Rally Day, an action in support of divestment from the apartheid of South Africa.
The collection contains issues from the following years: 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1985, and 1987.
