Scope and content:

This collection of papers documents McCaughey's research process while completing A Statistical Profile of the Barnard College Faculty, 1900-1974. Materials include raw data collected from faculty and emeriti through questionnaires and McCaughey's analysis of the data in the form of charts and tables. Data analyzes characteristics of Barnard's faculty including gender, age, prior education, ties to Columbia, other teaching appointments, residence, birthplace, family background, marital status, finances, etc. Original questionnaires and CVs are included in these papers, although access is restricted.

Also included in this collection of papers are correspondence with faculty, emeriti, and alumnae; manuscript drafts; and personal records relating to the production of the report including expenses, research and travel records, and notes. Two copies of the final report and three copies of Academic Profiles accompany the collection. Academic Profiles, published in 1991, was another project of Robert McCaughey's that has information about the education, specialties, and publications of the faculty of Barnard College for the 1991-1992 academic year.

Biographical / historical:

Robert A. McCaughey, emeritus professor of history, joined the faculty of Barnard in 1969. He is the author of multiple books on the history of Barnard College and Columbia University, including A College of Her Own: The History of Barnard; Stand, Columbia: A History of Columbia University in the City of New York, 1754-2004; and A Lever Long Enough: A History of Columbia's School of Engineering and Applied Science Since 1864. McCaughey was the founding director of the Barnard first-year seminar program and served several terms as chair of Barnard's history department. From 1987 to 1993 he served as dean of the Barnard College faculty.

Restrictions:

Some materials in boxes 5 and 6 are restricted. Restricted materials regarding the faculty are personal in nature and were given to McCaughey with the assurance that information would not be personally ascribed. These materials will become unrestricted after the death of the faculty member or emeritus.

Photocopies or scans may be made for research purposes.

Permission to publish material from the collection must be requested from the Barnard Archives and Special Collections. The Barnard Archives and Special Collections approves permission to publish that which it physically owns; the responsibility to secure copyright permission rests with the patron.
