Committee on Committees, 1968

In 1967, a Barnard student named Nancy Gertner, then the undergraduate president, proposed a radical change to the College: an all-College government based on a system of student-faculty committees. (Barnard Bulletin, April 8, 1987). While this all-College government plan was never fully realized, it set into motion large campus upheavals in the following years. The goal was to make sure student voices were heard while making decisions about the College that affected them. The Committee on Committees was formed in 1968 to work out a new structure for the all-college government, which would involve three constituencies. This was the precursor for a system of tripartite committees overseeing different areas of the College and composed of students, faculty, and administrative staff.(Reorientation, 1970, page 23). As of the writing of this finding aid in April 2024, the current status of this committee is unknown.
