Hamilton Fish letters, 1820-1917

This group of approximately 1,000 letters from the papers of Hamilton Fish, Sr. relates to the business, functioning, and activities of Columbia College in the 19th century. The letters include those addressed to Fish and those written by him. The earliest material bears on Fish's activities and interests at about the time he graduated from Columbia, but the majority of the letters fall into the latter part of his life, many being written by and to Fish as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Columbia College. The collection includes correspondence with presidents Charles King, F.A.P. Barnard, and Seth Low of Columbia College, also with Edmund Bailey, Charles Davies, Charles W. Harper, William M. Sloan, William C. Schermerhorn, and others. The majority of the letters are original manuscripts and typescripts, but many of the letters from Fish are photostatic and typed copies. Most of the letters are tipped onto manila sheets. Included are two diaries of Mr. Fish's European travels, 1856-1857. There is also a box of printed materials relating primarily to the settlement of the Alabama Claims.

Source materials on Sir James Jay, relating principally to his trip to England to raise funds for King's College, 1762-1763, and to the subsequent lawsuit brought by the Governors of the College to recover funds which he had collected. Letters, documents, and accounts in manuscript as well as photostats of the records in the Public Records Office in London bearing on the legal action are included. There is some personal and biographical material on Jay as well as photostats and other copies of his writings.

Paul Harvey Aron (1921-1991) was an expert on Japanese investments and a historian of the Soviet Union. Researchers interested in the Japanese stock market, Japanese industry, American investment in Japan, and Japanese investment in the United States in the 1970s and 1980s will be particularly interested in Series I. But the bulk of these files pertain to Aron's academic career, and will be of greatest interest for researchers studying Russian and Soviet history—in particular, Soviet historians and historiography in the 1930s (the subject of Aron's unpublished dissertation, much of which is included in Subseries II.3).

The collection contains RNK correspondence, documents, photographs, subject files, organizational records and printed materials. There are letters from Boris Bakhmeteff, Pavel and Petr Dolgorukov, Zinaida Gippius, Aleksandr Kutepov, Dmitrii Merezhovskii, Bernard Pares, Ariadna Tyrkova-Williams, George Vernadsky, and Petr Vrangel. There is a short essay by Aleksandra Tolstaia about her father. The manuscripts relate to political, historical and sociological issues. Most of the subject files relate to emigre organizations other than the RNK, while those of the RNK are classified into files of financial records, bulletins, minutes and lists of names and addresses. Among the printed materials are brochures and pamphlets, clippings, newspapers, and books.

The collection includes photocopies of letters by Josef Cardinal Mindszenty and an undated photograph of Pope Paul VI. The arranged correspondence dates from 1947 to 1980. There are manuscripts by a number of Hungarian emigres as well as by Pfeiffer himself. The subject files contain information on the Assembly of Captive European Nations. Among the printed materials are 49 folders of newspaper articles by or about Pfeiffer. In addition, there are seven reels of 7 1/2" audio tape containing interviews with Pfeiffer.

Material gathered by Oswald Garrison Villard in the researches for his biography JOHN BROWN, 1800-1859: A BIOGRAPHY FIFTY YEARS AFTER. A large part of the materials is copies of correspondence both contemporary and of a later period, concerning John Brown and his associates, especially in the Kansas Territory and at the Harper's Ferry raid. Of the original letters in the collection, many are from descendants and family of John Brown and the men who accompanied him on his raid. There are clippings, pamphlets, proof sheets, and other printed matter. Photographs number 181 items.
