The correspondence deals with literary and political topics, from such people as Hayden Carruth, Irwin Edman, Lola Ridge and Norman Thomas; numerous manuscripts of Mrs. Marshall's writings, including the notes, drafts, manuscripts and proofs of her last novel THE HILL IS LEVEL and various manuscripts of the stories published in THE CONFRONTATION AND OTHER STORIES, and numerous manuscripts of poetry and short stories. Also included is material on the World War II draft of 19-year-olds, economic aid for Western Europe, the Vietnam War, the origin of SANE, the Committee for Nuclear Responsibility, the Amchitka Islands nuclear tests, the Task Force against Nuclear Pollution, and personal correspondence from her own and her husband's families

The correspondence includes 12 letters from Roland Barthes, 1963-1978, concerning French literature in French and American universities, and one letter from Charles Maurras and his comments on Roudiez's Columbia University dissertation (1950), CHARLES MAURRAS: GENESIS OF A REACTION; also a typescript of the translation and revision of the dissertation, MAURRAS JUSQU'À L'ACTION FRANC̦AISE, published in Paris in 1957. In addition, there are several typescript drafts and page proofs all with holograph corrections for Roudiez's translations of Julia Kristeva's DESIRE IN LANGUAGE (New York: Columbia University Press, 1980) and POWERS OF HORROR (New York: Columbia University Press, 1982); and the typescript for Roudiez's book FRENCH FICTION TODAY(New Brunswick: Rutgers University Press, 1972)

9 autograph letters signed, totalling approximately 34 pages, chiefly between family and friends of Maria L. Patterson, concerning her disappearance en route from New York City to Saco, Maine in March 1867. Letters dated chiefly between April and October 1867, with one undated letter, and one letter by Maria dated 1861. Some letters mention the consultation of a clairvoyant who claimed Maria could be found in Lowell, Mass., but she was apparently never located. From Maria L.
