Elliott M. Sanger papers, 1936-1986

Abstract Or Scope

Included are Sanger's personal diaries (1936-1967) relating to WQXR. Also included is a complete bound file of the WQXR PROGRAM GUIDE (June 1936-December 1963) containing a record of the broadcasting of classical music in New York City, the daily schedule, and essays on composers, music festivals, individual compositions and music in general by such writers as Irwin Edman, Will Durant, M. Lincoln Schuster, Edward Johnson, John Barbirolli, as well as by Sanger and his co-founder, John V. L. Hogan. The collection includes business letters, congratulatory and testimonial letters from listeners and advertisers, reports on the station's history, samples of newspaper clippings containing WQXR advertisements and program listings, market surveys of listeners, and promotional brochures prepared for prospective advertisers. There is a corrected typescript and galley proofs for Sanger's book Rebel In Radio (New York, Hasting House, 1972) and 6 volumes of documents in support of the station's application for "clear channel" status filed with the FCC. Also included are 49 photographs of the station's staff and musical personalities, 4 audiotapes of 1973 interviews with Sanger, and 4 audio cassettes celebrating WQXR's 50th Anniversary.

Aleksandra Nikolaevna Belli Memoirs, 1957-1960

Manuscript memoirs (125 p.). They largely concern the world of rural landlords in Chernigov province in the late 19th and early 20th century. There is also reminiscences about von Meck's family and people Belli saw in their home, including artist B. M. Kustodiev; actors L. V. Sobinov, A. V. Nezhdanova, I. A. Alchevskii; Ippolit Il'ich Tchaikovsky, brother of the composer, first leader of the boy scouts in Russia, and many others.

Series I contains correspondence, typescripts with holograph corrections, and galley proofs relating to entries in, and the production of, IESS. Series II includes correspondence relating to changes in articles, production schedules and procedures, and financial records. The Classified Office Files contain correspondence of administrative officers of IESS; memoranda, minutes and agendas of Editorial Advisory Board meetigs; lists of biographers and suggested contributors; and monthly reports. General Production Files are composed of correspondence, invoices, drafts of table of contents, a style manual, editing procedures, and an index. There is also correspondence with prospective members of the Editorial Advisory Board.

The Yiddish Theater collection includes material on the Yiddish theater collective The Vilna Troupe (Di Vilner trupe) regarding their shows in Europe (press clippings and programs). The collection also includes a few ephemera (autographed pictures), some correspondence of M. Schneidow/Shnatman, Kalisch, and Jonas Jacobson, and a variety of typescripts/manuscripts (incl. film exposés by M. Schneidow). The collection also includes the Bergen Belsen photo albums and Yiddish sheet music of the twentieth century published in New York City (primarily by Hebrew Publishing Co. and Metro Music).

Elena Mogilat Papers, 1900-1981

Papers include correspondence, manuscripts, documents, photographs, subject files, and printed materials. The extensive correspondence relates to Mogilat's personal and professional activities and includes letters from many of her students and colleagues. Correspondents include Gleb Struve, Alexandra Tolstoy and Boris Unbegaun. Of special interest are letters by her first husband Baron von Taube, written from the front during World War I, and correspondence with various Russian acqaintances about the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 1930s in which they describe life in a communal apartment, and plans to rescue friends who have been arrested. Subject files concern Columbia's Russkiĭ Kruzhok and the Avtonomoff method of teaching Russian to Americans. There are letters, photographs, concert programs and music of Russian emigre composer and pianist Ariadna Mikeshina. Manuscripts are by various persons; most are by John Paul Mihaly, who had been Mogilat's student. There is also a manuscript of translations by Clarence Manning, "Four Poems by Blok." Documents and photographs concern Mogilat and her family, both before and after emigration. Printed materials consist mostly of off-prints of articles by Clarence Manning and others, primarily on literary topics. There are also books, mimeographed materials, periodicals, and clippings.

Typescript memoir by P. V. Danil'chenko entitled "Moi vospominaniia o Velikom Kniaze Konstantine Konstantinoviche: k predstoiashchemu v 1958 godu stoletiiu so dnia ego rozhdeniia" (40 pages typescript). The memoir concerns cultural evenings organized by the Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich in the Izmaĭlovskii Guard Regiment and the 1914 production of the Grand Duke's play "Tsar' Iudeiskii" at the Court Theater in the Hermitage, for which Glazunov composed incidental music.

Columbia University Libraries Music Library Zarzuela Collection, 9999

Abstract Or Scope

The Zarzuela Collection at Columbia University consists of almost five hundred different zarzuelas. Both nineteenth and twentieth century works are represented by libretti, scores, and separate instrumental parts. Formats include printed, typewritten, and handwritten items. Many of the libretti contain role assignments and other handwritten notes which indicate they were used by a traveling zarzuela company. Among the authors of the libretti are Javer de Bergos y Sarragoiti, Jose Estremero y Cuenca, Jacinto Benavente, and the Quintero brothers.

Sara Eugenia Blake Bookplate Collection, circa 1750-1950

A collection of bookplates assembled by the bookplate designer and collector Sara Eugenia Blake (1886-1973). The collection also includes correspondence and greeting cards received by Blake in the course of her collecting activities, as well as books and pamphlets relating to the collecting of "ex libris" art.
