History / Biographical Note

Biographical / Historical

The Life and Work Movement was started after World War One by the preparation of the Universal Christian Conference on Life and Work held in Stockholm in 1925. It was an Ecumenical attempt for Orthodox and Protestant churches to try and reach consensus about the practical activities of Church and their relationship to states and society. A continuation committee and then the more organized Universal Christian Council for Life and Work carried on the work of the Stockholm conference through several meetings and research activities. This culminated to the Oxford Conference on Church, Community and State in 1937. The Life and Work Movement was a part of the Ecumenical movements of the early 20th century that led to the creation of the World Council of Churches in 1937-1938. It was merged in the World Council of Churches, along with the Faith and Order Movement.
