This collection is arranged in seven series.

Description

Summary

This collection consists of photographs, correspondence, event materials, fundraising records, calendars, publicity materials, programs, newsletters, interviews, and records related to a renovation project. It includes two photograph albums/scrapbooks containing mostly photographs, plus a few documents, with 61 black and white photographs of events at the Maison française, such as the visits of Edith Piaf, Jean-Paul Satre, Maurice Chevalier, Charles Boyer and Marcel Marceau.

History / Biographical Note

Biographical / Historical

Founded in 1913, the Maison française of Columbia University was the first French cultural center established on an American campus. Its mission is to promote interest in French and Francophone culture, history, literature, politics and society, to foster innovative scholarship, to enable exchange across disciplines and schools at Columbia and beyond, and to contribute to international and intercultural understanding.

All external visitors, including alumni, must meet the University's primary COVID-19 vaccination series mandate and are required to adhere to the University's COVID-19 policies . After clicking 'Submit Request', users will login with their UNI and password (Columbia affiliates) or their special collections account (external users). Appointments are required and will be arranged according to each individual repository's policy.

(Eugene Sheffer, director of the Maison Française from 1942 to 1966, created a photo album to document Maison visitors during his tenure. The album was donated by the Sheffer family and has been digitized by Columbia University Libraries.
