History / Biographical NoteBiographical / HistoricalThe Columbia Committee for Community Service started in the 1940s. Originally, the Committee ran a small, local gift shop with inventory from Columbia's faculty and staff's donated jewelry, crystal, china, silver, oil paintings, furniture, and books. In 1947, they started an annual appeal to support organizations and charitable projects at home and abroad. In the early 1960s, the focus shifted to support local charities and even more so during the sharp economic downturn and urban blight of the 1970s and 1980s. The Columbia Community Chest was a fundraising campaign for the neighborhood welfare agencies and citywide community agencies of the United Fund of Greater New York. |
